POSITION SUMMARY
The Production Assistant is responsible for supervising, directing, coordinating, and assisting with the execution of field production activities to ensure all farming tasks are completed efficiently and accurately. This position supports multiple departments and collaborates with internal teams and third-party contractors to ensure proper implementation of tasks such as planting, thinning, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, and general crop maintenance. The Production Assistant plays a key role in maintaining detailed records, scheduling labor and equipment, and ensuring compliance with company procedures, safety standards, and production goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Direct Responsibilities or job duties to Supervise/Direct/Coordinate and Assist
1. Communicate between Assistant Operations Manager, Managers and third-party contractors regarding the final day of germination/sprinkler use to coordinate thinning and weeding activities. Work directly with third-party contractors to organize and approve non-harvest labor tasks such as weeding and thinning. Responsibilities include determining the number of hours and laborers needed for each task, ensuring fields are suitable for automated thinning, coordinating locations (ranches/blocks), setting up complete schedules, and managing logistics across multiple locations if necessary.
2. Coordinate automated thinning and ensure accurate electronic recording within the crop management system. The Production Assistant is responsible for maintaining records of the completion of third-party contractor work.
3. Provide direct supervision of the transplanting process, including weekly transplant scheduling. Ensure correct crop varieties are planted in accordance with the established planting schedule provided by the Production Supervisor. Verify that fields are properly prepped (e.g., bed shaping, chemical injection, herbicide application) and clearly marked/flagged.
4. Responsible for delivery of transplants from the greenhouse to the field. Small loads will be picked up and transported directly by the individual in this position.
5. Coordinate with the Irrigation Manager to schedule and confirm the timing of sprinkler/irrigation use needed at each site to complete the transplanting process.
6. Oversee custom harvesting of wheat, sudan, and seed crops. Responsibilities include ensuring timely access to fields as needed (e.g., when one field is needed sooner than another), verifying the quality of contracted work, counting the number of loads transported from the fields, collecting field tickets from contracted companies, and obtaining field samples.
Other Responsibilities
1. Assist with supervision, as needed, in both the Planter and Equipment Departments.
2. Provide coverage for a supervisor position when a supervisor is on vacation or time off.
3. Support the Food Safety Department as needed.
4. Responsible for invoice approvals and maintaining current records in relevant databases, including:
a. Transplanting information
b. Crew/thinning information
c. Harvest data from field crops
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
