Job Objectives
The School Crossing Guard helps ensure the safety of students and other pedestrians as they travel to and from school. This role involves managing pedestrian crossings at assigned locations, promoting safe behaviors, and helping create a positive and welcoming environment for students each day. The Crossing Guard will use signs, hand signals, and awareness of traffic flow to safely guide individuals across designated crosswalks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Strong communication skills, especially with children.
- Ability to follow directions and respond calmly in unexpected situations.
- Dependable, punctual, and committed to student safety.
- Positive attitude and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
- Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable qualification can be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.
- Safely guide students and other pedestrians across streets at assigned crossing points before and after school.
- Monitor traffic flow and identify safe opportunities for crossing.
- Use provided equipment, such as stop signs or flags, to stop traffic when needed.
- Communicate and model safe crossing procedures for students.
- Encourage safe behavior and discourage unsafe actions in a positive and supportive manner.
- Report unsafe situations, roadway concerns, or incidents to the building administrator or district designee.
- Assist students with mobility needs or disabilities when necessary.
- Maintain punctuality and consistency in scheduled times.
- Wear district-provided reflective gear or uniform items for visibility and safety.
- Demonstrate professionalism, patience, and responsibility in interactions with students, staff, families, and the community.
- Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
- Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities as directed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.
- Promotes a favorable image of the school district.
- Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
- Takes precautions to ensure student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised. Reports unauthorized persons or suspicious circumstances immediately.
- Complete required training by appropriate deadlines (Vector, Gifted, Science of Reading, etc.)
- Accepts responsibility for personal decisions and conduct. Strives to develop rapport and serve as a positive role model for others.
- Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

(Additional) Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent, depending on circumstances and factors that are not predictable.
- Potential for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
- Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
- Exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes. Standing outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Duties may require detailed paperwork.
- Occasional exposure to loud noises.
- Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop.
- Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
