Summary of Responsibilities:
The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of all special education staff. The Coordinator serves as the LEA representative at Evaluation Team Meetings and IEP Team meetings, and works with the building administrator at each assigned school and Director of Special Education to ensure that the provision of special education services to students with Individual Education Plans (IEP) is provided. The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for fostering collaboration in the department and recognizing the accomplishment of departmental members. Depth of knowledge regarding special education law, processes and procedures, exceptional leadership and communication skills are required.
Essential Functions at Assigned School(s):
Assists in the recruitment, selection and assignment of special education personnel;
Collaborates with building leadership regarding curriculum development, student needs;
Works with the Director of Special Education and Building Administrator to identify/organize professional development needs and activities in addition to participating in relevant professional development opportunities;
Independently and collectively collaborates with the building Administrator and Director of Special Education to analyze student data as it pertains to performance on statewide and local assessments;
Plans for and contributes to effective transitions for students from grade level to grade level and new students and their families;
Ensures that IEPs meet all regulatory and district standards, are written to reflect best practice, reflect high quality programming and are implemented with fidelity;
Works with the Building Administrator and the Director of Special Education to develop and implement efficient and effective service delivery models reflecting best practice;
Communicates effectively with parents and staff;
Fosters collaboration between special education and general education as it pertains to teaching, learning and assessment;
Acts as the chairperson and LEA of Evaluation Team and IEP team meetings;
Works with the Building Administrator and Director of Special Education to develop an annual budget for personnel and expenditures;
Assists with the coordination of extended school year services for students;
Demonstrates knowledge of Secondary transition planning and processes;
Shares in attendance at Local Advisory Committee (LAC) meetings;
Assumes other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
