As the Benefits and Payroll Manager you will be responsible for creating and administering the company’s compensation and benefit programs. You will oversee the company’s payroll process and related personnel, including building and training SOPs, handling compliance related inquiries and reporting activities. You will be a key contributor to the annual budgeting process, incentive compensation review, and other aspects of the company’s compensation planning. For employee benefits, you will collaborate with the VP of HR on the strategic direction of the company’s benefit plans, ensuring compliance in plan administration. In this role, you are an important part of the Human Resources team, seeking to maximize employee engagement and productivity through competent service of payroll and benefits plans.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Oversee the accurate completion of bi-weekly payroll for multi-state, multi-entity company in keeping with legal requirements and best practices.
- Manage and develop direct reports to ensure payroll and benefit activities are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Complete second sign offs on payroll, employee change, and benefit transactions, resolving discrepancies and verifying documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness of the records.
- Become an expert on the Paycom HRIS processes and procedures in order to facilitate payroll and benefits transactions, record retention, and employee self-service adoption.
- Collaborate with the HR team and other company leadership on capabilities and workflows in the system.
- Stay up to date on Paycom enhancements with an eye toward continuous improvement of the system to support the business.
- Complete SOPs for payroll and benefit related functions and train users (HR, managers, employees, as applicable) in SOPs.
- Manage employee benefit programs including group insurance (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, worksite, and pet), tax savings plans (HSA and FSA plans), and 401(k) plan.
- Collaborate with the VP of HR and executive team to ensure company compensation and benefit plans meet the company’s goals of attracting and retaining talent and providing the best value for the cost.
- Engage with benefit brokers, recordkeepers, and carriers to ensure smooth, compliant operation of company benefit plans.
- Develop benefit strategy in collaboration with our broker, senior leadership, and the HR team to position Fortis as an employer of choice and maintain benefit affordability (for employee and the company).
- Lead benefit plan compliance efforts by ensuring testing, documentation, and annual filings are created and completed on time.
- Manage financial aspects of company benefit plans, including ensuring monthly billing is complete, working with accounting on any discrepancies, monitoring plan financial performance, and completing regular and ad hoc analysis on Fortis benefit spend.
- Lead annual open enrollment efforts to include plan design, costing, and decision making (in collaboration with executive team), education of HR team and employees around changes, facilitation of open enrollment meetings, and ensuring complete and accurate enrollment processing.
- Create a communication plan including regular cadence of two-way benefit communication (from the company to employees and from employes to the company), leveraging a combination of electronic communication (video, email, brain sharks), broker sponsored pieces, bulletin boards, surveys, etc.
- Lead the payroll and benefit related components related to acquisition with direction and support from the VP of HR.
- Stay up to date on benefit and payroll compliance, best practices, and external landscape to ensure Fortis plans, processes, and systems are the best they can be to meet the needs of the company and our employees.
- Participate in department-wide initiatives as a leader in the Human Resources Department.
- Additional duties as necessary.
Education and Experience:
- College Degree in Business or related discipline is preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience in a combination of HR, Payroll, Benefits administration.
- Must have experience with payroll processing.
- At least 2 years of management experience preferred.
- HR or CPP certification preferred.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Creative, out of the box thinker.
- Proactive with excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Self-starter and a team player who will thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
- Comfortable with data driven management and data tools and analysis.
- Strong detail orientation with ability to document SOPs and lead others in compliance.
- Change agent capable of leading through influence.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft office (including Microsoft Excel and Outlook).
- Proficient with HRIS packages. Paycom experience preferred.
- Ability to conduct business with integrity and maintain confidentiality of sensitive data.

- Willing to attend required training courses or sessions related to the job as assigned.
- Regular sitting and repetitive office tasks are required.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Office hours. Hybrid option available.
- Exposure to dust or noise for short periods in the production area.
- Wear required PPE when completing specific job tasks or entering production area.
- Travel as needed in support of the above responsibilities; up to 10% per year.
