Position Title: Substitute Assistant Principal

 

Reports to: Principal

 

Department: Administration

 

Position Category: Temporary, exempt, full-time

 

Position Summary: In collaboration with the school’s administration, support a positive and effective learning environment for students, families, and staff. The Substitute Assistant Principal serves in an acting capacity during the designated leave of absence, assisting the Principal with leadership of the campus instructional program. This role ensures continuity of school operations by maintaining high standards of instruction and student achievement, supporting compliance with District policies, applying instructional programs, and overseeing daily campus activities. A successful candidate is expected to demonstrate with proficiency the following essential job functions:

 

Instructional Leadership/Management

  • Encourages and supports development of innovative instructional programs, participates in program evaluation measures, and makes suggestions for improvement where needed
  • Implements state and school curricula and assessments aligned with state standards
  • Monitors and ensures high-quality instruction practices among teachers and staff that improve student performance
  • Monitors multiple forms of student data to inform instruction and intervention decisions to maximize student achievement
  • Reinforces expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies and classroom management
  • Fosters collegiality and team building among staff members. Encourages their active involvement in the decision-making process

 

Human Capital

  • Observes employee performance regularly, records observations, and conducts evaluation conferences; serves as second appraiser as needed for designated teacher appraisal system
  • Assists Principal in recruiting, selecting, placing, mentoring, and retaining diverse and highly effective teachers and staff
  • Coaches and develops teachers and staff, by giving individual feedback and aligned professional development opportunities
  • Provides clear expectations of performance, and conducts rigorous evaluations using multiple data resources

 

Executive Leadership

  • Solutions-oriented, treats challenges as opportunities, and supports the school and community through continuous improvement
  • Proactively seeks and acts on feedback, reflects on personal growth areas, seeks development opportunities and changes practice in ways that improves student outcomes
  • Communicates with all audiences and develops productive relationships
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards Practices for Texas Educators in such a way that it demonstrates a moral imperative to educate all children and follows practices and procedures of his or her respective districts

 

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Takes a leadership role in planning activities, outlines and tracks clear goals, tracks targets and strategies to ensure attainment of the school’s mission and goals that improves teacher effectiveness and outcomes
  • Participates in development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members
  • Helps Principal develop, maintain, and use information systems to maintain records, and track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators

 

School Culture

  • Works with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate
  • Ensures that school rules are uniformly applied, and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook
  • Conducts conferences about student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers
  • Ensures that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods
  • Applies a variety of student discipline techniques to meet the behavior needs of individual students
  • Assists with developing a sense of community and responsibility between students and adults
  • Articulates the school’s mission to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission
  • Demonstrates awareness of school-community needs, and initiates activities to meet those needs using appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement

 

Administration & Fiscal/Facilities Management

  • Oversees campus operations in Principal’s absence
  • Aligns resources with the needs of the school, and effectively monitors the impact of these resources on school goals in support of the Campus Improvement Plan and assists the Principal with fiscal oversight of all campus budgets including campus and student activity funds as directed
  • Assists the Principal with the development, implementation, and sustaining a shared vision of high expectations for all students and staff, including stressing the importance of daily attendance of both students and staff
  • Takes a leadership role in planning and scheduling of daily school activities, including the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules
  • Oversees reporting and monitoring of student attendance, grading and discipline; works with staff to identify and address issues
  • Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; monitors and maintains inventory in accordance with School procedures
  • Coordinates operational support services such as transportation, custodial, and cafeteria to best meet campus needs
  • Complies with District/School policies, state and federal laws, and regulations affecting schools

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides clear expectations of performance, supervises and conducts rigorous evaluations using multiple data sources, of professional staff as assigned by the school Principal
  • Directs the work of teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, and others as assigned

  • Demonstrates high quality customer service; builds rapport/relationship with the consumer

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Performs all job related duties as assigned and in accordance to the Board rules, policies and regulations
  • All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation, and staff supervision
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans
  • Knowledge of elementary and/or secondary school curriculum and concepts
  • Knowledge of federal and state guidelines and District policies and procedures regarding special population students’ services and programs
  • Knowledge and understanding of literacy instruction
  • Skill in judgment and creativity in decision-making; considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Skill in public relations, communications, and interpersonal relations
  • Ability to consider academic, social, and emotional needs of students in making decisions about academic settings and accommodations for individual students
  • Ability to differentiate instructional support for experienced and new teachers
  • Ability to develop and implement plans in all areas of the instructional program
  • Ability to plan and implement projects that support the strategic plan
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and procedures relating to District/School operations
  • Ability to use qualitative and quantitative data to make decisions about teaching and learning including student and teacher assessment
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and implement effective time management techniques

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office and classroom equipment, including Smart Board, computer and peripherals
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
  • Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 25 pounds)
  • Environment: Works in an office setting; works irregular and/or prolonged hours; works inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; occasional travel
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions

 

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university required; Degree in School Administration preferred
  • Certification/License: Valid Texas Principal Certification required; valid driver license
  • Experience: 3 years’ successful teaching experience required
  • Official Transcripts: Required, if hired; Foreign transcripts must be equivocated through an approval agency
