Structural Engineer / Project Engineer – Buildings

2–5 Years Experience | Austin, Texas | Full-Time | Hybrid

High-Impact Projects. Sharp Problem Solvers. Rapid Execution.

Are you a highly analytical structural engineer who thrives on solving complex problems, moving fast, and sweating the details? FORT Structures is an Austin-based structural engineering firm working on design-forward commercial and residential projects throughout Texas.

Our work includes commercial office, multifamily, hospitality, adaptive reuse, mass timber, mixed-use, high-end residential, and emerging construction technologies. We design across steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and mass timber and use Revit/BIM to produce clear, coordinated, construction-ready structural documents.

We are a small, dedicated team that likes solving hard problems.

At FORT, you won't be buried inside a large production team or limited to one narrow part of a project. Our engineers work directly with our Principals, architects, contractors, and clients from early design through construction.

Our goal is simple: make architecture buildable without losing design intent.

Why FORTDirect Principal Mentorship

You'll work directly with experienced FORT Principals and senior engineers on structural systems, calculations, detailing, constructability, coordination, and project strategy.

We want engineers to understand why a structural solution works—not simply how to run the calculation.

Small Team. Real Responsibility.

Because we're intentionally a small firm, engineers get meaningful project responsibility early.

You'll participate in schematic design, engineering, BIM coordination, detailing, client coordination, and construction administration rather than working on one isolated portion of a project.

As your experience grows, so will your responsibility for projects, clients, and younger staff.

Hybrid Collaborative Work Environment

FORT offers a Austin, TX–based (hybrid). Flexible hybrid work environment centered around our collaborative East Austin office. Must reside in the Austin area; relocation required for non-local candidates. No remote work from outside Austin.

We value the flexibility and focus that comes from remote work, but we also believe some of the best engineering happens sitting together, sketching through problems, reviewing models, and learning from one another.

Our office is designed to make that easy. Engineers, BIM staff, Project Managers, and Principals work closely together rather than in separate silos.

Interesting Problems

We deliberately pursue projects that require thought.

That may mean unusual geometry, adaptive reuse, mixed structural systems, demanding architecture, existing buildings, emerging technologies, or simply finding a cleaner and more efficient way to make something work.

If you enjoy figuring things out, you'll have plenty to work on here.

What You'll Do

  • Perform structural analysis and design for building projects
  • Design structures using steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and mass timber
  • Develop framing and lateral systems during schematic design
  • Identify difficult structural issues early and develop practical solutions
  • Prepare clear, organized, reviewable structural calculations
  • Work directly with our BIM team to develop coordinated Revit models and construction documents
  • Develop custom structural details
  • Coordinate directly with architects, contractors, and other consultants
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs
  • Participate in site visits and construction administration
  • Take increasing ownership of project coordination, schedules, clients, and budgets as your experience grows

What We're Looking For

  • 2–8 years of structural engineering experience focused primarily on building design
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field
  • EIT/FE preferred; PE license strongly valued for more experienced candidates
  • Commercial and/or residential building design experience
  • Experience designing structures in multiple materials
  • Strong structural fundamentals and sound engineering judgment
  • Experience with structural engineering software such as RISA, RAM, RAM Concept, Enercalc, and Excel
  • Comfortable working in a Revit/BIM-based environment
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to take ownership, follow through, and manage multiple priorities

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who:

  • Likes solving difficult problems
  • Wants to become a better structural engineer
  • Takes ownership of their work
  • Works well with architects, builders, and other engineers
  • Values direct feedback and mentorship
  • Pays attention to details without losing sight of the big picture

The Projects

Our engineers work across a broad range of project types and structural systems, including:

  • Commercial office and mixed-use buildings
  • Multifamily developments
  • Hospitality and restaurant projects
  • Adaptive reuse and historic structures
  • Mass timber
  • Concrete and post-tensioned concrete
  • Structural steel
  • Wood and masonry construction
  • High-end custom residential
  • Modular and prefabricated construction
  • 3D-printed concrete
  • Architecturally complex specialty structures

Growth at FORT

This role can flex significantly based on experience.

A developing engineer may initially work closely with Project Managers and Principals while steadily taking ownership of larger portions of projects.

A more experienced engineer may lead smaller projects, coordinate directly with clients, mentor younger engineers, and begin moving toward Project Manager responsibilities.

We want people who are interested in building a career at FORT and taking on more responsibility as the firm grows.

Compensation Benefits

Salary: $75,000–$105,000, depending on experience, technical capabilities, and professional licensure.

FORT's benefits include:

  • Employer medical insurance premium
  • Employer HSA contribution
  • Dental and vision coverage available
