General Description
JOIN OUR TEAM AS A SHELVER!
Under close supervision, shelves and maintains library materials in proper order, searches for materials, and assists in clerical tasks.
Essential Job Functions
Shelves or otherwise stores all library materials, such as books, periodicals, and audio-visual items, in proper sequence; shifting and straightening as necessary. Searches for and delivers library materials as assigned. Empties book depositories and helps prepare materials for reshelving. Keeps materials in usable condition by sorting for repair or processing. Keeps library in order by clearing tables of materials, straightening furniture, and replenishing pencils and paper supplies, as directed. Assists in daily opening and closing of library building as directed. Sets up library meeting room for programs and conferences. Serves as meeting room attendant for programs and community groups beyond closing, as assigned. Assists in the operation of audiovisual equipment when requested. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Job requires extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping and reaching. Also requires use of a video display terminal. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Experience working with the public.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must satisfy State Department of Labor requirements for minimum working age.

- Ability to read English and to recognize sequences of numbers sufficient to accurately sort, shelve and find books and other materials.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
- Ability to operate basic library equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
- Ability to learn and apply automated procedures and to utilize computer equipment and software in performance of day-to-day work.
- Ability to follow written instructions and manuals and apply such instructions to work situations.
- Ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures.
- Some knowledge of library filing.
