Fire Inspector

Forsyth County Department of Emergency Services is seeking a proactive and professional Fire Inspector to conduct essential safety inspections, enforce the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code, and educate property owners within Forsyth County. The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills, sound independent judgment, and a background in emergency services to effectively promote and maintain public safety standards.

The Fire Inspector is responsible for conducting initial and follow-up inspections of commercial and residential properties in Forsyth County to ensure compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. This role includes educating property owners and tenants on fire safety practices and collaborating with them to develop corrective action plans for any violations found.

The position requires frequent interaction with the public and involves a high degree of independent judgment. Strong communication skills, professionalism, tact, and effective problem-solving abilities are essential for success in this role, along with a solid understanding of fire inspection procedures and enforcement.

Special Requirements

This position has been identified to interact with children and must comply with NC G.S. 153A-94.2(b) “requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity,must require the applicant, if offered the position, to be subject to a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI.” These checks must be conducted in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26, the statute which authorizes the SBI to provide a fingerprint-based state and national criminal record check to cities and counties.

Basic understanding of building construction principles and practices, including electrical and mechanical systems; ability to identify current and potential fire hazards across various types of structures and installations; capable of following both oral and written instructions; skilled in writing clear and concise reports; able to interpret and enforce rules and regulations with fairness, tact, and consistency; possesses strong interpersonal skills for working effectively with colleagues and the public.

• High School Diploma, GED, Associate’s Degree Preferred
• Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
• Two years of experience in an Emergency Services field focusing on Fire Suppression and/or Prevention Activities
• NC Standard Fire Inspector I (Probationary accepted with ability to obtain standard withing 6 months)
• NC Fire Life Safety Educator I or ability to obtain within one year
• ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
• Current CPR Certification
• Performs fire inspections to ensure compliance with the NC Fire Prevention Code
• Document fire code violations & issues citations & permits as needed
• Process fire inspections in department’s RMS
• Researches and interprets Fire Code questions & inquiries
• Assist in providing Public Education programs as needed
• Performs related tasks as required or assigned
• Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
