About Forge Prep

Forge is building a different kind of school.

Our students spend less time sitting through lectures and more time building, investigating, debating, creating, and solving real problems. Our Guides are part teacher, part coach, and part project leader.

But great Guides shouldn't spend their entire day doing everything.

That's where the Guide Associate comes in.

The Role

Guide Associates help make the Forge day work.

You'll spend most of your time with students, providing another capable adult who can supervise, encourage, redirect, troubleshoot, and help students keep moving.

This is not a traditional teaching position, and it is not our Guide Residency, which is an 18–24 month pathway for people preparing to become Forge Guides.

Instead, Guide Associates allow our Guides to spend more of their time doing the work that requires their expertise: planning great learning experiences, coaching students deeply, assessing their progress, and improving our curriculum.

Your job is to help create the conditions that make that possible.

What You'll Do

Support students throughout the day. Help students understand what they need to do, get organized, work through problems, stay focused, and develop greater independence. You won't be expected to teach every subject. You will be expected to be curious, resourceful, and willing to help a student figure something out.

Own early drop-off and late pickup. Help create a welcoming, well-run beginning and end to the Forge day while giving Guides protected time to prepare, plan, and collaborate.

Supervise lunch and other parts of the day. Take ownership of lunch, transitions, breaks, and other periods where students need strong adult presence but not necessarily a lead Guide.

Help students during independent and project work. Circulate, answer questions, troubleshoot, redirect students who are stuck or off-task, and know when something needs to be escalated to a Guide.

Keep the day moving. Help students get where they need to be, prepare materials and spaces when necessary, and solve the dozens of small problems that inevitably arise in a school full of kids doing ambitious things.

Know our students. Build strong relationships with students and become someone they trust, while maintaining high expectations for how they work, behave, and treat one another.

You Might Be Great at This If...

You've worked successfully with kids before, perhaps as a camp counselor, coach, tutor, after-school instructor, paraprofessional, youth program leader, or in another student-facing role.

You genuinely like spending time with 10- to 13-year-olds.

You're warm without being a pushover.

You notice what needs to get done and do it without waiting to be asked.

You're comfortable with a little chaos and good at bringing order to it.

You're patient when a student is struggling, but your instinct isn't to do the work for them.

You're reliable. If you're responsible for 12 students at 7:45 AM, everyone needs to know you'll be there at 7:35.

You don't need to know the answer to every question. You're good at helping someone figure out how to find it.

And you're excited by the idea of helping build a school from the ground up.

What This Role Isn't

It's not a conventional teacher's aide position. We expect Guide Associates to have real ownership and meaningful relationships with students.

It's not the Forge Guide Residency. Resident Guides are on an intensive 18–24 month development path toward leading Forge's cross-disciplinary, challenge-based learning model. Guide Associates are focused on student support, supervision, and helping the school operate exceptionally well each day.

And it's not a stepping stone you have to leave. Someone can become exceptional at this job and build a career supporting students and Guides at Forge.

Guide Associates help us use that attention wisely.

By taking ownership of supervision, student support, and the everyday mechanics of school life, you give Guides more time to plan extraordinary learning experiences and more time to work deeply with students when their expertise matters most.

And you'll become another adult at Forge who knows our students, expects a lot from them, and helps them become increasingly capable of doing things for themselves.
