Job Summary:
The purpose of this job is to assist classroom teachers and the Teacher of the Hearing Impaired to ensure that they are providing the information to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Essential Duties
- Acts as the facilitator of communication between the student who is deaf/hard of hearing, staff, students and others as appropriate.
- Provides classroom assistance which may include repetition of directions or materials, monitoring comprehension and redirecting to classroom teacher for reteaching.
- Learns signs for special vocabulary prior to need.
- Works with classroom teachers to help find different strategies of presenting information to the deaf/hard of hearing student.
- Monitors classroom videos to ensure they are properly captioned, if not, adding captions to the videos.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certified interpreter.
National Interpreter Certification (NIC), a National Certificate in Interpreting (CI), Certificate in Transliterating (CT) or in both (CSC, comprehensive skills certificate).
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
