5 Hour HS Custodial/Grounds

Reports To: Custodial Supervisor
Pay Grade: Starting at Grade 1, Step 1, $15.42 per hour
Schedule: 5 hours per day / 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Job Summary: Employee will be responsible for custodial and grounds related activities to help maintain clean, safe, and functional school grounds in accordance with district standards. This position plays a key role in maintaining buildings, athletic fields, turf areas, parking lots, landscaping, and outdoor equipment to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Prior landscape management experience preferred
- Knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform grounds work efficiently
- Ability to build effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community
- Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English
- Ability to learn and adapt to new procedures, equipment, and techniques
- Ability to operate computers, email, and work order software
- Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record required
Essential Job Functions:
- Collaborate with Lead Grounds and Head Custodians to prepare for scheduled and unscheduled events.
- Support high standards of turf and grounds management
- Adjust work shifts as needed for weather-related issues (snow, ice, flooding, etc.)
- Maintain positive, cooperative interactions with students, staff, administration, parents, and community members
- Complete daily tasks while responding to needs from school staff and stakeholders

Perform grounds care, including:
- Preparing and maintaining athletic fields and turf
- Mowing, weeding, sprinkling, trimming, and pruning
- Field lining, dragging play surfaces, and filling as needed
- Applying fertilizer to turf, shrubs, and trees as directed
- Maintain cleanliness of sidewalks, steps, parking areas, fences, and landscaped areas
- Remove debris from assigned outdoor areas
- Remove snow and ice from driveways, parking lots, and walkways; apply salt/sand as needed
- Assist with fencing maintenance and athletic equipment needs
- Perform additional tasks assigned

The employee must frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as cleaning supplies, packing and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move 80 pounds, such as salt and furniture. The employees will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work will be performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities as well.
Mental Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
Evaluation: In accordance with the Custodial and Food Service Agreement.
Terms of Employment:
The employee will remain free of any alcohol or drugs throughout his/her employment with the district as outlined in Board Policy #4210.
