What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Worship Music position at Forest Hills Presbyterian?
Position Overview:
The Director of Worship Music is responsible for helping to create, plan, implement, and oversee Christ centered worship services through music, audio visual technology, and other forms of worship arts. In partnership with the pastor and other staff, this position helps set the direction for worship services which are a blend of modern and traditional music and practices.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Organizes and coordinates year-round music programming:
- Leads the choir, praise band, bell choir, and other music ensembles either directly or through volunteer or paid part-time staff.
- Creates a positive and supportive environment that encourages broad participation in all music programs.
- Works with the Director of Family Ministries to create and implement musical programs that support student participation in worship services.
- Oversees and leads musical programs for the Christmas and Easter Seasons, as well as for other events throughout the year.
- Looks for opportunities to create new or expand existing music programs or to utilize new worship and music styles and formats to create worship services that honor God and appeal to the congregation.
- Supervises part-time paid staff and volunteers who support music activities.
2. Critical member of the team that brings the message, music, A/V support and the creative elements of worship together:
- Participates in weekly planning sessions with the pastor and serves on the Worship Design Team.
- Selects and ensures that all music aligns with the overall theme and message for that week’s worship or other special services.
- Facilitates communication and coordination between any music groups, any other participants in the worship service and the pastor.
- Leads or ensures effective leadership of all music groups or individual music performers in the worship service.
- Oversees the A/V and technology team, which consists of both part-time paid staff and volunteers.
3. Supports the ministry, Christian education, and other programs of the church through music and worship arts activities as requested.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Pursuing or has bachelor’s degree in music or related field
- Experience leading choirs and instrumental groups of all ages and types
- Experience in worship service planning

- Strong instrumental and/or vocal skills
- High degree of communication and organizational skills
- Ability to recruit, train and motivate participants in worship arts
- Knowledge of audio-visual tools and techniques
