Position Title:  Head Cheer Coach

Immediate Supervisor:  Athletic Director/Principal 

 

POSITION SUMMARY
The job of “Head Coach” is to support the Forest Grove School District athletic objective, policy of interscholastic athletics, and Forest Grove School District Athletic Code. The District believes that extra-curricular activities are an integral part of school life. All students, regardless of their ability, should take part if possible to be able to grow physically, intellectually, and socially through participation. Coaches organize and conduct the athletic programs to meet the needs of the school district and their participants.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exhibit exceptional integrity and character at all times
  • Act as a positive role model in the school and community
  • Cultivate a program culture that demands respect between participants
  • Recruit students within the school to participate in the program
  • Collaborate with and follow direction of the Athletic Director
  • Organize the specific athletic program so that it is consistent with the District and Oregon School Activities Association goals and objectives for student/athletes
  • Communicate with athletes in a manner that models respect. Refrain from using profanity or derogatory language at participants, officials, parents or others associated with the program
  • Support the academic achievement of student/athletes 
  • Oversee the assistant coaches that contribute in the athletic program
  • Participate in and support the youth program that feeds the high school program
  • Demonstrate proper active supervision during all scheduled activities of student/athletes
    including, but not limited to, games, practice, locker room, and transportation
  • Meet with the players and parents prior to or at the beginning of the season to cover all participation expectations
  • Commit to continued professional development and improvement of the knowledge of skill development, training techniques, fundamentals, game strategy, and the rules of the sport
  • Collaborate with the athletic director to arrange for transportation and finances for contests
  • Be accountable for expenditures and fund-raising in accordance with established
    District procedures and written approval of the athletic director and/or principal
  • Follow current District procedures for the handling of program finances
  • Be responsible for the care, distribution, and collection of District equipment and supplies
  • Report participant injuries to Trainer following current District procedures
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, athletes, parents, and assistant coaches throughout the program
  • Hire assistant coaches using the support of the Athletic Director, meeting District hiring standards and procedures
  • Collaborate with other District coaches to schedule opportunities for participants to access multiple activities/sports
  • Encourage participants to go out for other sports and activities as they desire
  • Attend all meetings as required by the Athletic Director, Principal or league leadership
  • Assume responsibility for the conduct and performance of program assistant coaches
  • Report any behavior that endangers the physical, emotional or mental safety of anyone in the program to the Athletic Director within 24 hours
  • Develop and implement an off-season program for your athletes
  • Cooperate and collaborate with Viking Booster Club on their projects which relate to the athletic program
  • Develop, articulate and implement a vision for the specific sport program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in and/or knowledge of the sport, coaching techniques, and student supervision
  • Ability and willingness to effectively communicate in verbal and written modes with
    student athletes, parents, assistant coaches, and other school staff
  • Ability and willingness to perform coaching responsibilities in accordance with school and District procedures and policies
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred
  • Must have current Concussion Management and other trainings required by the OSAA, or the ability to obtain them
  • Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or District patrons
  • The ability to work harmoniously with others and collaborate solutions to concerns
  • Successfully pass criminal background check
