Duties
- Safely operate school buses according to traffic laws, vehicle codes, and school policies while transporting students on scheduled routes.
- Ensure passenger safety by enforcing behavior management policies and maintaining discipline onboard.
- Assist students with disabilities by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper securement during transit.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of the vehicle to verify mechanical condition, safety equipment functionality, and cleanliness before each route.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations, including emergency stop procedures, first aid needs, or accident incidents.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using clear English or multilingual skills when necessary.
- Follow all transportation safety regulations and emergency response procedures for transportation to guarantee a secure environment for all passengers.
- Perform heavy lifting tasks when necessary for vehicle maintenance or loading/unloading equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of routes driven, student counts, incidents, and vehicle inspections in compliance with state and local laws.
Skills
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit bus operation with a strong understanding of commercial driving standards.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures related to school transportation.
- Ability to perform defensive driving techniques and quick responses to traffic changes for passenger safety.
- Excellent communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for engaging with diverse communities.
- Experience working with children or in childcare environments; capable of managing student behavior effectively.
- Mechanical knowledge of vehicle systems for basic troubleshooting and maintenance awareness.
- Familiarity with child discipline policies and behavior management strategies within a school setting.
- CPR certification and first aid training to handle medical emergencies confidently.
- Physical ability for heavy lifting tasks and long periods of sitting or standing during routes.
- Strong customer service orientation with the capacity to create a positive experience for students and parents alike.
