Associate Aquatics Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Associate Aquatics Directors assures the safety of all aquatic participants in and around the pool area, maintains a safe pool environment, and coordinates the development, administration, supervision, and evaluation of aquatics staff and programming at the Cottingham Campus and Walhalla City pools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develop and maintain the weekly lifeguard schedule.
• Ensure adequate lifeguard coverage for all aquatic programs, pool operations, and special events.
• Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate staff availability, time-off requests, and operational needs.
• Manage staffing levels to align with budgeted hours while maintaining safe and effective pool operations.
• Responsible for supervision of aquatics programs and operations at CC and WC pool.
• Inspect and ensure high standards of maintenance and cleanliness of aquatic equipment and supplies, including first aid supplies.
• Uphold and exemplify high standards of customer service.
• Test pool water temperature and chemical levels daily, reporting any concerns to the Aquatics Director and making corrections as needed.
• Instruct swim lessons and/or guard in the absence of a scheduled lifeguard or swim instructor as necessary.
• Support, uphold, and follow YMCA policies and procedures.
• Participates in special events within the Aquatics Department as well as events facility-wide.
• Answer member questions about the YMCA and its programs.
• Evening and weekend hours required, coordinate schedule with the Aquatics Director.
• Act as a Primary Responder in case of injury, accident, or illness.
• Responds to incidents and fills out all Y accident and incident reports thoroughly and turns them in to Aquatics Director.
• Conduct aquatics orientation with all new employees.
• Always exhibit a professional attitude
• Assist Aquatics Director in planning and facilitating staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Conduct safety drills as outlined by the Aquatics Director.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATIONS:

• Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen certifications
• Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification (preferred or willing to obtain)
• Lifeguard Instructor (preferred or willing to obtain)
• Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer (preferred or willing to obtain)
• Certified Pool Operator (preferred or willing to obtain)
• Bloodborne Pathogens/Praesidium Child Abuse Prevention every year

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• 18 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent
• At least 2 years leadership and lifeguard experience
• Proficient in swimming and safety skills
• Must demonstrate qualities of a leader and be able to complete tasks and handle difficult situations with minimal supervision
• Must be observant, safety conscious and able to react calmly and quickly to an emergency
• Must be able to communicate well verbally and in writing, be able to handle several functions at once, think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, be flexible, instruct, and evaluate

SUPERVISORS AND ADMINISTRATORS WILL:

• Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
• Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk management
• Ensure there is a positive culture for responding and reporting for employees and volunteers
• Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
• Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk and prevention.
• Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the YMCA’s progressive discipline policy.
• Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
• Communicate to all employees and volunteers the YMCA’s commitment to zero tolerance of abuse to youth. Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.

SUPERVISORS AND ADMINISTRATORS WILL:

• Adhere to screening requirements for Minor Employees and use screening instruments designed to assess for abuse risk.
• Communicate to all Minor Employees the YMCA’s commitment to protect their youth from abuse.
• Provide Minor Employees with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
• Provide Minor Employees with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
• Require Minor Employees to adhere to policies/procedures related to abuse risk.
• Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the YMCA’s progressive discipline policy.
• Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
• Follow mandated reporting requirements.
