To support this growth, we are seeking an Assistant Controller to play a key role in financial reporting, accounting operations, and oversight of tax and statutory compliance across the business.
Job Description:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financial records, leading key aspects of the monthly close, and maintaining strong internal controls, including oversight of tax and statutory filings. This role partners closely with the Controller, FP&A, Operations, Technology, and Third-Party Corporate Filing team to support a fast‑growing, inventory‑intensive e‑commerce business.
This position offers strong exposure to controllership responsibilities and a clear development path toward broader leadership.
Accounting Operations & Financial Close
- Manage day‑to‑day accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
- Lead components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting
- Review balance sheet and income statement accounts; investigate and resolve variances
- Ensure financial records are complete, well‑supported, and audit‑ready
- Assist with preparation and review of financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP
Tax & Statutory Filings Oversight
- Own and control the preparation, review, and timely filing of all tax and statutory requirements, including sales & use tax, income tax support schedules, and other regulatory filings
- Coordinate with third‑party tax advisors to ensure filings are accurate, complete, and compliant
- Review tax calculations, reconciliations, and supporting documentation prior to submission
- Monitor filing calendars, deadlines, and compliance requirements across jurisdictions
- Support audits, inquiries, and information requests from tax authorities as needed
- Assist with process improvements and documentation related to tax and statutory compliance
Financial Reporting, Compliance & Controls
- Ensure consistent application of accounting policies and U.S. GAAP across the organization
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, workpapers, and responses
- Assist in maintaining and enhancing internal controls over financial reporting
- Identify control gaps and recommend improvements to reduce risk and improve efficiency
Cross‑Functional & Business Support
- Partner with Operations, Procurement, Category Management, and Technology to resolve accounting issues
- Support accounting for inventory, COGS, logistics expenses, vendor incentive programs, and marketplace activity
- Collaborate with FP&A to provide accurate financial data, variance analysis, and close support
- Assist with accounting considerations for new business initiatives, system implementations, and process changes
Working Capital & Financial Stewardship
- Support working capital management, including AP/AR reviews, payment cadence, and inventory reconciliations
- Review and validate transactional data across procurement, supply chain, and revenue operations
- Monitor key financial KPIs and assist in identifying performance drivers or anomalies
- Prepare routine management reporting and analysis packages
Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
· 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience (corporate accounting, audit, e‑commerce, retail, distribution, or marketplace preferred)
· Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, balance sheet management, and financial close processes
· Exposure to tax and statutory filings, including coordination with external tax providers
· Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred); strong Excel skills required
· Detail‑oriented, analytical, and comfortable working cross‑functionally
· Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment
· CPA or progress toward CPA strongly preferred
Location: Quincy, IL (Hybrid — 3 days/week in office)
Experience Required: 3–5 years
Pay: From $70,000.00 per year
