POSITION SUMMARY:

The Knife Sharpener’s duties include working with industrial machinery to sharpen knives, food preparation cutting accessories, and other equipment. In addition, the Knife Sharpener may assist with other aspects of the process, including (but not limited to) including washing knives and cutting accessories, stocking inventory, unloading and loading deliveries, cleaning appliances and machinery, removing and disposing of waste, as well as other duties, as needed.

Machinery Startup

  • Understand and follow the proper procedures for starting up machinery and preparing for use

Sharpen Knives, Cutting Accessories, and other Equipment

  • Operate machinery safely, following all safety procedures.
  • Handle and carry knives and cutting accessories carefully and according to proper safety procedures.
  • Hollow grind or hone knives, cutting accessories, and other equipment according to best practices, producing ready-to-deliver equipment for customers.

Machinery Shut-Down and Cleaning

  • Understand and follow the proper procedures for starting up machinery shut down, including lock out/tag out procedures
  • Clean machinery, following all safety procedures.

Other Aspects of Production Process

  • Assist with other aspects of the production process, as directed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Reports directly to the Production Manager

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Experience:
  • 1-2 years of factory or shop experience using industrial tools and machinery; preference given to those with knife sharpening or knife handling experience.
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Bilingual fluency is a plus (English and Spanish)

  • Must be able to stand for hours at a time, including standing in stationary positions for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, or drags boxes or equipment up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation, and ability to move heavier items with assistance.
  • Works in production and warehousing facilities, navigating machinery, equipment and tools.
  • Frequently required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, and machinery, and eye-protection will be provided.
  • Occasionally required to position self in a stooping, kneeling, or crouching manner.
  • Frequently communicates with other employees, and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The noise level in the work environment may require ear protection, which will be provided.
  • Walks on uneven surfaces, including surfaces that may be wet or slippery with oils or other substances.
  • Handles various industrial solvents and other substances that require knowledge of proper handling and cleaning procedures to work with safely.

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS

  • May require flexibility in scheduling, such as the ability to work irregular shifts such as potential evenings or weekends.
