SUMMARY

Emotional and Behavioral Support Instructional Assistants will be trained by the behavior specialist and be able to provide more readily available and immediate interventions and supports for special education students as well as to work with teachers to set up the tools that work for the students.  Emotional and Behavioral Support Instructional Assistants will work directly with the district’s behavior specialist in order to provide support for students with special needs and/or challenging behaviors.  Emotional and Behavioral Support Instructional Assistants will lead and carry out plans which will require them to model and train staff in the classrooms as well as work closely with students with special needs to ensure that they are making progress on their goals.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Receive Registered Behavior Technician training (training and supervision provided by the division), receive ongoing supervision from the divisions behavior specialist
  • Work under the supervision of the district’s behavior specialist to support students in all buildings
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to implement behavior, social-emotional, and educational supports
  • Travel to all division schools to provide support under the direction of the division’s behavior specialist
  • Develop and prepare materials to support student behavioral, education, and social-emotional needs
  • Model and teach staff to use behavior, social-emotional, and educational tools and strategies
  • Prepare data collection systems to monitor student progress and teach staff how to use those tools
  • Provide one on one support for students with challenging behaviors
  • Collect data for functional behavior assessments
  • Train staff to implement behavior intervention plans
  • Collect data on implementation fidelity of behavior intervention plans
  • Collaborate with the behavioral specialist to troubleshoot behavior plans
  • Attend parent/teacher meetings (if appropriate)
  • Assists the student(s) to whom assigned in all facets of daily living to include but not limited to moving from room to room, toiletry, personal hygiene assistance along with changing/cleaning, undergarments, outerwear and feeding.
  • Under supervision of the behavioral specialist, provide instruction to students based on the principles of applied behavior analysis.
  • Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
  • Develops a supportive and collaborative relationship with classroom staff
  • Assist school personnel in creating, planning, and running groups for students social and emotional needs
  • Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
  • Assist behavior specialist in providing professional development for division staff
  • Assist with student transportation and medical delivery as needed or assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Valid Virginia Driver's license required. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Individuals must be highly qualified to be considered for this position.  There have three options to meet the designation of highly qualified (one of the three must be met):

  1. Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; OR
  2. Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR
  3. Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing, readiness, and mathematics readiness). Example includes the ParaPro Assessment. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to  handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
