What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Technician position at Florida Sugar Cane League?
Overview
This position supports the Florida Sugar Cane League (FSCL) Research Program by contributing to research, and field operations that advance the development and evaluation of improved sugarcane varieties for Florida's sugar industry.
Maintain open lines of communication with Lead project managers and Agronomists pertaining to overall goals and initiatives developed.
Conduct field and greenhouse activities to support sugarcane variety development, including planting, evaluating, and maintaining experimental trials.
Assist in the selection and monitoring of sugarcane varieties under different soil and environmental conditions to support breeding and advancement programs.
Perform routine agronomic assessments such as growth measurements, disease observation, and yield component data collection.
Prepare and organize all necessary tools and materials for field operations, including machetes or knives, labeling tags, markers, data sheets or digital devices, sampling bags, and personal protective equipment to ensure safe and efficient work.
Support greenhouse operations, including propagation, irrigation management, pest control, and plant health monitoring.
Ensure strict adherence to protocols for clean seed production, minimizing contamination risks and maintaining varietal integrity.
Accurately label plant materials, record field observations, and communicate conditions clearly to support the sugarcane breeder, demonstrating strong attention to detail and reliability in all assigned tasks.
Plant experimental sugarcane varieties in accordance with research and breeding protocols.
Cut, load, transport, and process sugarcane from research trials to support harvesting and evaluation activities.
Collect and process field samples for yield assessment using tools and equipment such as machetes, scales, refractometers, polarimeters, NIR technology, milling and grinding equipment, and other research instruments.
Collect soil, plant tissue, and other samples as required by experimental protocols and research projects.
Accurately collect, record, and verify field, greenhouse, and laboratory data using paper or electronic data collection systems.
Assist with harvesting, sampling, and post-harvest processing of experimental plots while maintaining sample integrity and accurate identification.
Perform the application of chemicals in field or greenhouse settings when necessary, ensuring proper handling.
Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
