Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Scribe
EXPOSURE CATEGORY: I
DEPARTMENT: Clinic Operations
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Scribe cooperates in the process of patient care by providing direct support to the physician and by completing ophthalmic procedures that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Scribe shall:
- Be a high school graduate or the equivalent
- Write clearly and legibly
- Spell and abbreviate accurately using medical ophthalmic terminology
- Have prior experience working for an ophthalmologist or in an ophthalmic related area (desired).
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Scribe reports to the Technician Supervisor and assist the physician in direct patient care. The Scribe must maintain patient confidentiality.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
The duties and responsibilities of the Scribe are listed according to levels of functional performance and specific technical skills. The levels progress from the basic expectations at position entry and build to advanced techniques and procedures. It is expected that the Scribe at the highest level, will be capable of performing all listed duties and responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
In providing physician support, the Scribe:
1. Direct patients to exam rooms and prepare the patient for physician examination.
2. Assists the physician during physical examination.
3. Records information pertinent to each patient's diagnosis and treatment as directed by the physician.
4. Obtains patient consent signature as needed.
5. Instills eye medication/drops for patients when instructed.
6. Reviews physician’s orders to complete internal procedures and referral forms.
7. Completes encounter form information to reflect diagnostic treatment and visit parameters for each patient.
8. Redirects the patient to other treatment/scheduling areas.
9. Educates patient regarding administration of medications as directed by the physician.
10. Completes requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician with full documentation in the patient chart.
11. Maintains a smooth patient flow within the exam area.
12. Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring equipment is cleaned and disinfected in an appropriate manner; inventory and maintain supplies within the work area, replenish as needed.
