Job Description

The Victim Witness Advocate performs a variety of specialized duties in order to effectively and efficiently maintain the operation of the Sheriff’s Office Victim Witness Program.

Essential Functions:

  • Contacts all victims of violent crime within established time frames and provides necessary referral services.
  • Provides on-call service to respond to crime scene.
  • Assists victims in transportation, paperwork, and court appearances.
  • Prepares case files containing incident reports, updates, and referral forms.
  • Meets daily with criminal investigators to review incident reports.
  • Provides monthly service reports.
  • Insures the rights of victims and witnesses are upheld in accordance with the South Carolina Victim’s Bill of Rights.
  • Conducts and analyzes surveys of victim’s needs and services received.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures concerning the delivery of victim and witness assistance services.
  • Provides departmental training to all employees who have direct involvement with crime victims and witnesses.
  • Develops and implements written agreements with other victim and witness service providers.
  • Makes public presentations as required.
  • Provides crime-to-court assistance to victims of serious and violent crimes as well as assistance to investigators and prosecutors. Provides courtroom accompaniment, employer intervention, resource referral, etc.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Assists with bond hearings.
  • Operates a variety of office equipment and vehicles.
  • Assists with training volunteers.
  • Performs all other related duties as required.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in business, sociology, criminal justice or other relevant field supplemented by three to four years of general experience in the judicial, law enforcement, or victim services fields, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must achieve and maintain law enforcement officers certification from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.

  • Must pass the pre-employment Physical Agility Test (PAT).
  • Frequently required to perform basic physical activities and communicate effectively to carry out essential job duties.
  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 10 lb. objects regularly.
  • Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.
