The Cook supervises and performs meal preparation for inmates. Ensures the service of quality food and the maintenance of a clean kitchen and equipment.
Essential Functions
- Supervises inmate workers assigned to kitchen duty.
- Prepares and serves daily inmate meals.
- Maintains kitchen according to established government health and safety regulations. Follows guidelines for the proper storage, preparation and service of food.
- Accepts food shipments and stocks appropriately.
- Reviews special diet requests and plans healthy, appetizing meals.
- Completes required paperwork.
- Counts utensils to ensure none is in the possession of inmates.
- Operates a variety of equipment and tools such as a fryer, ovens, grill, stove, steamer, toaster, mixers, knives, basic cooking utensils, cleaning equipment and supplies, etc.
- Requests maintenance service as needed.
- Interacts and communicates with supervisor, Detention Center Administrator, Center employees, direct reports, inmates and vendors.
SOME NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS ARE REQUIRED
- Performs all other related duties as required.
- Requires a high school diploma supplemented by one to two years of general food preparation experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.
- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 20 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 5%.
