What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer position at Float?
Senior Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer
Location: Full-time On-Site (CA)
Type: Full-Time | Founding Team Opportunity
Float is an early-stage aerospace company developing advanced airship systems for large-scale cargo applications. We are focused on solving hard aerospace problems and translating ambitious concepts into real, tested hardware. Our team is small, execution-driven, and building a new airship platform from first principles.
The Role
As a Senior Avionics & Electrical Systems Engineer, you will design, build, and integrate the electrical and avionics systems that enable safe, reliable operation of Float’s airship platform. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on power distribution, sensing, flight-critical electronics, and system integration.
You will work closely with structures, propulsion, and systems engineers to take avionics designs from early architecture through physical hardware, testing, and iteration.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical and avionics subsystems for a large-scale cargo airship
- Architect power distribution, grounding, and protection schemes
- Select, integrate, and validate sensors, actuators, and flight-critical electronics
- Design wiring harnesses, connector schemes, and system layouts with manufacturability and serviceability in mind
- Support hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, bench testing, and system bring-up
- Participate directly in prototype build, integration, and testing
- Assist in developing test plans, validation procedures, and failure analyses
- Collaborate closely with software, structures, propulsion, and manufacturing teams
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent real-world experience
- Strong background in electrical system design for embedded or aerospace systems
- Experience designing and integrating power, sensing, and control electronics
- Proficiency with schematic capture, wiring diagrams, and basic PCB-level design
- Understanding of EMI/EMC, grounding, and fault tolerance
- Comfortable working hands-on with hardware in a shop or lab environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Nice to Have
- Experience with avionics systems or flight-critical electronics
- Background in UAVs, experimental aircraft, robotics, or automotive systems
- Familiarity with certification-aware or regulated environments
- Experience with hardware bring-up, debugging, and instrumentation
- Prior experience at an aerospace startup or skunkworks-style engineering team
