Job Description: The Assistant Controller supports the CFO in managing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role oversees day-to-day accounting functions across the company's moving, storage, and logistics operations, working within a multi-system environment that includes Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) 2018, QuickBooks Online, and MoversSuite. The position ensures accurate, timely financial records and helps maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations.

Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee daily accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes across Great Plains 2018 and QuickBooks Online, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and bank reconciliations.
  • Oversee the order-to-cash workflow in MoversSuite, including job costing, revenue recognition, and settlements for local, long-distance, and storage services.
  • Ensure accurate data flow and reconciliation between MoversSuite, Great Plains, and QuickBooks Online.

Systems & Integration

  • Serve as a power user of Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) 2018 for general ledger, financial reporting, and fixed assets.
  • Manage QuickBooks Online for applicable entities or functions, and reconcile activity against the primary GP ledger. May be relevant as a systems transition is planned for later 2026.
  • Oversee MoversSuite operational and billing data, ensuring integrity of the interface between operations and accounting.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies arising from multi-system data flows; recommend process and integration improvements.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, consolidating across GP and QuickBooks Online as needed. May be relevant as a systems transition is planned for later 2026.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Track key operational metrics (revenue per move, fuel costs, fleet expenses, labor utilization, storage occupancy) using MoversSuite and GP data.
  • Support the CFO with ad hoc financial analysis and reporting.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Help develop, document, and enforce accounting policies and internal control procedures across all systems.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements, including multi-state filings where applicable.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax preparers.
  • Maintain compliance with industry-specific requirements such as interstate tariff and valuation accounting.

Cash & Asset Management

  • Monitor cash flow and assist with treasury functions.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting for the vehicle fleet, equipment, and facilities, including depreciation schedules in Great Plains.
  • Manage fuel cards, equipment leases, and related expense tracking.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff (AP/AR clerks, bookkeepers, payroll).
  • Cross-train staff across the GP, QuickBooks Online, and MoversSuite environments.
  • Step in for the CFO on accounting matters as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA is a plus but not required.
  • 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Industry experience in moving, logistics, transportation, or fleet-based operations a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains), QuickBooks Online, and MoversSuite (or comparable moving-industry operational software) strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience reconciling data across multiple accounting and operational systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
