Industrial Automation Design Engineer

FlexibleAssembly Systems Inc
San Diego, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 7/30/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/26/2026

About Us

Flexible Assembly Systems Inc. is a premier integrator of FANUC Robotics, specializing in custom, turn-key automation equipment with a focus on assembly, dispensing, and packaging cells. As our engineering team continues to grow, we are seeking a versatile Industrial Automation Design Engineer with strong SolidWorks capabilities and practical, hands-on mechanical assembly experience.

Role Overview

In this role, you will be responsible for end-to-end mechanical engineering—from initial CAD concept through hands-on physical build. You will generate rendered conceptual designs, build full 3D assemblies in SolidWorks, create detailed manufacturing drawings, and actively participate on the shop floor during mechanical assembly and system integration. This position requires a "design-and-build" mindset, collaborating closely with vendors, technicians, sales teams, and end-users.

Key Responsibilities

  • 3D CAD Modeling: Create detailed designs for individual parts, sub-assemblies, and complex, large-scale automation cell assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Conceptual & Sales Support: Produce fast-turnaround, rendered 3D conceptual designs to support proposal development and project visualization.
  • Electrical & Pneumatic Modeling: Model cabinet layouts, pneumatic routing, and electrical enclosures within 3D system designs.
  • Manufacturing Documentation: Prepare precise 2D machine drawings for fabrication, detail comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs), and draft clear build instructions.

Hands-On Assembly & Floor Support

  • Mechanical Build Participation: Actively assist and participate in the physical assembly, fitting, alignment, and mechanical setup of custom robotic cells.
  • Troubleshooting & Field Modifications: Identify design improvement opportunities during physical assembly and rapidly adjust CAD models/drawings accordingly.
  • Tooling & Mechanical Debugging: Work directly with hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and shop equipment to build and refine custom tooling and mechanisms.

Project Execution & Collaboration

  • Timeline Management: Manage build schedule timelines to ensure engineering deliverables and assembly milestones stay on track.
  • Vendor & Component Specification: Work closely with suppliers and vendors to select, specify, and source optimal mechanical and off-the-shelf components.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate effectively with outside sales, project managers, assembly technicians, and end-user clients throughout the design and build phases.

Qualifications & Experience RequirementsTechnical & Mechanical Skills

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
  • Industry Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation, custom machinery, or machine building.
  • Hands-On Assembly Expertise: Proven practical skills in mechanical assembly, power/hand tool usage, mechanical alignment, and troubleshooting physical systems.
  • CAD Proficiency: 5 years of professional experience with SolidWorks (version 2013 or newer); advanced assembly and modeling skills required.
  • System Integration: Solid understanding of robotic cell layout, mechanical design for assembly/dispensing/packaging, and pneumatic system integration.
  • Software: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for project tracking and documentation.

Professional & Interpersonal Traits

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interfacing with shop floor staff, technical teams, vendors, and clients.
  • Work Ethic: Results-driven, proactive problem-solver with a "roll up your sleeves" attitude and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Verification: Must be able to pass required background and reference checks.

What We Offer

  • From design to creation: See your designs come to life as you take custom robotic systems from computer model to fully functional machine.
  • Diverse Technical Challenges: Work on varied, cutting-edge robotic applications across multiple industries.
  • Collaborative Culture: Join a supportive, highly skilled engineering and assembly team.
