Certified Lead Diesel Mechanic

POSITION OVERVIEW

FleetFix Truck Service is seeking an experienced, dependable, and highly skilled Certified Lead Diesel Mechanic to join our growing team. This full-time position pays $45.00 to $48.00 per hour, based on experience, certifications, diagnostic proficiency, and overall qualifications.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles. This position includes hands-on repairs, advanced troubleshooting, quality control, and providing technical guidance to other technicians.

Work will be performed inside our repair facility and, when assigned, at customer locations through our mobile field-service operation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks, commercial vehicles, buses, recreational vehicles, and related equipment.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and drivability concerns.
• Repair diesel engines, transmissions, fuel and cooling systems, steering and suspension systems, air and hydraulic brakes, and vehicle electrical systems.
• Diagnose and repair emissions and aftertreatment systems, including DPF, DEF, SCR, EGR, and regeneration-related concerns.
• Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, component replacements, and major mechanical repairs.
• Use computerized diagnostic equipment, scan tools, multimeters, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and electronic service-information systems.
• Review driver vehicle inspection reports and identify safety concerns or repairs requiring immediate attention.
• Conduct or assist with DOT inspections when properly licensed or certified.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and support to other technicians.
• Help prioritize and assign repairs according to safety, customer needs, technician experience, and operational urgency.
• Inspect completed repairs to verify accuracy, safety, and quality workmanship.
• Communicate diagnostic findings, repair recommendations, labor requirements, and parts needs to management and service personnel.
• Accurately document labor performed, parts used, diagnostic findings, and additional repair recommendations.
• Perform mobile and roadside service calls when assigned.
• Help improve shop workflow, productivity, repair turnaround times, and customer satisfaction.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Follow company policies and all applicable federal, state, local, OSHA, and environmental safety requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• At least five years of professional heavy-duty diesel repair experience.
• Experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and commercial vehicle systems.
• Knowledge of electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension, transmissions, fuel systems, cooling systems, and emissions systems.
• Experience using electronic diagnostic equipment, scan tools, multimeters, wiring diagrams, and computerized service information.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems with minimal supervision.
• Previous lead-technician, shop-foreman, supervisory, or technician-mentoring experience
• Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to preventing repeat repairs.
• Professional verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic computer proficiency and the ability to complete electronic repair documentation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced repair environment.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Professional mechanic’s tools appropriate for the position.
• Ability to safely perform the physical duties associated with heavy-duty vehicle repair.

CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants should possess applicable diesel-mechanic certifications. Relevant certifications may include:

• State of Michigan Medium/Heavy Truck Mechanic Certifications
• ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications
• ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification
• Commercial Vehicle or DOT Inspector Certification
• Air-Brake Certification
• Manufacturer-specific diesel training or certifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• CDL Class A or Class B license
• Mobile, roadside, or field-service repair experience
• Experience repairing multiple truck and engine manufacturers
• Experience with Cummins, Detroit Diesel, International/Navistar, Freightliner, Ford, GM, Isuzu, Hino, Mack, Volvo, or comparable commercial vehicles
• Welding, fabrication, hydraulic, trailer-repair, or air-conditioning experience
• Experience using fleet-maintenance or repair-order management software
• Knowledge of Fullbay shop-management software is a plus
• Experience explaining diagnostic findings and repair recommendations to customers or service personnel

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work underneath vehicles for extended periods
• Ability to safely lift, carry, push, or pull heavy parts, tools, and equipment
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, vehicle lifts, jacks, and other commercial repair equipment
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and consistently follow established safety procedures

COMPENSATION

• Starting pay is based on experience, certifications, diagnostic proficiency, leadership capabilities, and overall qualifications.
