General Statement:
The Fleet Science Center’s Cafe Team Member plays a key role in creating a welcoming and memorable experience for every guest. In addition to providing exceptional customer service, the Cafe Team Member ensures all orders are accurate, handles transactions and merchandising, assists in light food preparation, and maintains a clean, inviting environment. This position supports both daily operations and concessions to provide a seamless guest experience.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Reports to: Assistant Director of Business Operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:
- Guest Experience: Provides a high level of hospitality by greeting guests, answering menu questions with expert product knowledge, and ensuring a welcoming environment.
- Sales: Maximizes sales potential by using suggestive selling techniques (e.g., suggesting pairings, daily specials, or add-ons) to enhance the guest’s meal.
- Financial Accuracy: Operates the Point of Sale (POS) system with precision; performs cash handling, card processing, and drawer reconciliation according to company standards.
- Order Coordination: Acts as the bridge between the kitchen and the guest; ensures all orders (dine-in, take-out, or delivery) are accurate, complete, and presented professionally.
- Merchandising & Display: Stocks and maintains hot/cold cases, grab-and-go displays, and beverage stations; ensures all signage and pricing are accurate and visible.
- Light Food Prep: Assists the BOH (Back of House) team with basic prep (assembling bowls/wraps, portioning sauces, or packaging pizza) during peak hours or as needed.
- Cleanliness & Sanitation: Maintains a pristine shopping and dining environment; frequently sanitizes high-touch surfaces, clears tables, and follows Health Department safety standards.
- Compliance: Completes temperature checks for display cases and follows FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation for all retail and prepared food items.
- Concessions Support: Cross-train on concessions stand to ensure full coverage of Fleet operations.
- Dish Support: Assists with washing dishes as needed or assigned.

Physical Requirements of this Position:
Medium work: Must be able to stand and walk for the duration of a shift; must be able to lift 30–50 pounds (e.g., restocking beverage crates or moving displays). Requires frequent reaching, bending, and fine motor skills for operating touch-screen POS systems and packaging food.
Business Location Presence: This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours to adequately perform all duties.
Qualifications:Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:
- Preferred: 1 years of experience in retail, food service, or a cash-handling role.
- Alternative: Candidates with no prior experience will be considered if they demonstrate a high energy level and a "guest-first" attitude.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to remain calm, professional, and friendly under pressure.
- Must possess (or be able to obtain on first day) a valid Food Handler’s Permit as well as an RBS certificate
- Ability to quickly learn ingredients, allergens, and preparation methods to assist guests with dietary restrictions.
- Ability to handle currency quickly and accurately; basic mental math for making change and calculating totals.
- Ability to double-check order accuracy and maintain the aesthetic "look" of the front-facing food displays.
