FLANDERS is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to work with AC and DC drives combined with motors and/or PLC/HMI Automation Systems, potentially including scripting, other program platforms, databases, etc. The role assists senior Engineers and Managers in the design, assembly, configuration, testing, and commissioning of drive and automation systems across heavy industry segments including metals, mining, plastics, utilities, and manufacturing.
Essential Functions
Engineering & Project Support
- Build technical competencies through an intentional training plan including technical sessions and shadowing across sales, proposals, design, fabrication, assembly, testing, commissioning, and customer service.
- Support projects ranging from repeat applications to system updates, replacements, engineering-only designs, and new sub-systems or complete systems.
- Develop specifications; coordinate deliveries and deadlines; oversee panel assembly and testing; direct purchasing; provide installation oversight and commissioning.
- Assist with AC/DC drive systems and PLC/HMI automation tasks as directed by senior staff or Manager.
- Proficient in AC and DC machinery and basic AC/DC drive operation, including brand-specific setup and cross-brand functionality.
- Applications may include speed-controlled drives, pump and fan control, load sharing, torque control, PID processes, hoists, winders, tension control, discrete or bus-controlled systems, and other required processes.
- Proficient in PLC programming (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram) and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley Panel/View, Siemens Comfort and Unified Panels).
- Experience with sequential and analog controls, PID loops, process control (temperature, pressure, flow, weight, speed), communications protocols, HMI interfaces, diagnostics, scripting, drive supervision, and network interfaces.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and/or direct applicable experience.
- 5–7 years of Control System Engineering experience.
- Experience with AC/DC drives, PLCs, HMIs, Siemens S7 (S7-1500, S7-1200) and Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix.
- Experience with PLC, PC, and other programming languages.
- Strong understanding of Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, Profinet.
- SCADA proficiency preferred (Wonderware, Ignition).
- Experience with PID tuning, UL/NFPA standards, power electronics, and rotating machinery.
- Mining, metals, manufacturing, utilities, mobile, or equipment industry experience a plus.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, troubleshooting, and time management skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and personal computing.
- Ability to follow complex instructions, complete training, exercise judgment, and represent the company positively.
- Frequent overnight travel required.
