What are the responsibilities and job description for the College Safety and Security Associate position at Flagler College?
Flagler College is seeking a dedicated and community minded College Safety and Security Associate to join our team. This role is more than patrol work. It is about being a visible campus presence, building trust, and helping create a safe, welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors. The Security Associate plays a key part in protecting people, property, and campus operations through proactive engagement, situational awareness, emergency response, and customer service.
The ideal candidate enjoys serving others, responding calmly under pressure, and contributing to a positive campus climate. Whether assisting students in need, working alongside public safety partners, monitoring safety systems, or supporting special events, this role helps shape the daily experience of our campus community.
- Interact and communicate with students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a friendly, courteous, professional manner.
- Take proper action to deal with suspicious activity, trespassers, and law violators on campus.
- Monitor closed-circuit television systems, burglar alarms, fire alarms and sprinkler systems, and two-way radio communication.
- Assist building staff in conducting fire evacuation drills; evacuate buildings or areas during emergency situations.
- Assist ill, injured or disabled persons as needed.
- Perform special event assignments at on-campus events and crowd control.
- Routinely interact with and assist St. Augustine Police, sharing crime prevention and valuable safety and security information.
- Report all maintenance, landscaping and health issues, and life-safety and hazardous conditions through established department and/or College policies, protocols, or procedures.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the Flagler College Student Handbook, the Flagler College Staff Handbook, and the Office of Campus Safety & Security SOP Manual.
- Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Three (3) years’ post-high school general work experience
- Basic computer literacy and skills, to include the use of Microsoft Office Suite, MS Word or equivalent, Outlook, email, etc.
- Knowledge of Florida law, security and safety practices, and law enforcement principles in a college environment
- Pass a criminal background check and required physical.
- Ability to operate personal computer and associated software packages/programs, a cellular phone, portable radio, and AED.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a college environment during stressful situations or emergency conditions and exercise good judgment with tact and sound judgement.
- Ability to work without close supervision and to make proper independent decisions
- Basic investigative skills and techniques
- Time management and organizational skills
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to communicate clearly and with understanding via landline telephone, cell phone, two-way radio, and in person
- Ability to effectively communicate in English in both oral and written forms and to interact with members of the College community and visitors, including people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds
- Possess clear vision in a variety of light settings
- One (1) year of full-time security or law enforcement experience. Comparable duties in the U.S. Armed Services accepted.
- A current Florida Security Class D or G License.
- Associate’s degree or semester credit hour equivalent, or above.
- Certification in and ability to perform/administer basic First Aid, CPR, AED.
- Training/certification in the principles of the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
- Light work: exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible mount of force constantly to move objects.
- Climbing, sitting, balancing, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, repetitive motions, running, bending, squatting, kneeling, grasping and ability to communicate appropriately with students/colleagues.
- Ability to detect, perceive, identify, and recognize the odor of burning materials, noxious chemicals, or other harmful odors/scents
- Process manual dexterity to check locks, doors, windows, fire alarm pull stations, burglar and trouble alarm system control panels, etc.
