Responsible for trail and trailhead maintenance and assessment of trail conditions for the purposes of determining facility status. Assists in the construction and maintenance of natural surface and paved trails throughout the Park District.

  • Performs regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance of assigned hiking, bicycle and equestrian trails including trail tread and moisture content, armoring and bridge conditions, signage, clearing downed trees, mowing, litter pickup, line trimming, impacts to natural resources, and maintaining trail corridor to operational standards.
  • Performs landscape and other maintenance duties including: mowing, trimming, weeding, watering, planting, pruning, weed control, snow removal, cleaning restroom facilities, as needed. Applies chemical herbicides as required.
  • Monitors overall trail area for proper and/or unauthorized use; determines trail conditions and communicates to supervisor or the Marketing Department regarding public notification of trail use status.
  • Clears and constructs new trails and reroutes of existing trails; assists in the layout and design of trails.
  • Understands and applies sustainable trail design and maintenance methods.
  • Assists in the construction of trail structures such as bridges, staircases, fences, retaining walls and boardwalks.
  • Participates as a primary member of the agency-wide Strategic Trail Initiative (STI) and is trained to operate trail building equipment.
  • Trains and oversees seasonal and volunteer trail workers when assigned. Participates in all assigned volunteer trail days and recommends work agendas and assignments for volunteers. Ensures needed tools and supplies are available for the work day projects.
  • Performs minor mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and electrical maintenance repairs on buildings, equipment and vehicles, as required.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to: push and riding mowers, tractors, power tools and chain saws.
  • Maintains and monitors back country camp-sites connected to trail systems.
  • Works assigned schedules, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedules as required.
  • Provides service to the public, responding to questions, offering assistance, and providing information.
  • Collaborates internally, within and across departmental boundaries, to provide information and service to others in the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the agency and all staff.
  • Understands and applies land management concepts.
  • Orders, purchases and picks up materials and supplies as needed.
  • Restores, repairs, and maintains equipment for the assigned trails.
  • Ability to plan, organize and work effectively with diverse groups, including committees, volunteers and staff.
  • Interacts with the public to provide information and assistance and to interpret trail building techniques, trail use, and amenities along trail corridors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A combination of appropriate education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:
  • High school degree or GED with knowledge of sustainable trail building, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and general maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of, or ability to learn a broad range of maintenance trade skills (i.e., electrical, plumbing, carpentry, construction and mechanical), and gardening skills.
  • Valid Drivers' License which meets Five Rivers MetroParks' insurance carrier guidelines.
  • Willingness and ability to work an irregular schedule including extended hours, weekends and evenings.
Candidates must successfully complete a background check and drug screening test prior to employment.

Rate of pay for internal applicants may be higher than advertised rate.
