Job Details:

The Assistant Principal facilitates the development of strong systems and structures that support the growth and achievement of all students.  They actively participate in the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) work and promote the district's mission, values, and theory of action.  

 

Essential duties for all administrators include supporting classroom instruction; and active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development, activities, and pedagogy.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from an accredited college or university; 
    • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary license in: 
      • Principal/Assistant Principal (5-12)
      • SEI Endorsement
  • Proven track record of improving a school’s students’ growth and achievement;
  • Proven track record of supporting and actively engaging instructional leadership teams;
  • At least five (5) years of classroom teaching experience at the secondary level; high school preferred;
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations;
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents and advocate for children to effectively problem-solve;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and ability to work with all stakeholders;
  • Belief in the commitment to increasing personal growth, both academic and social-emotional, to obtain the highest level of achievement for every student;

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The Assistant Principal will:

  • Assist the principal in facilitating the design of the school’s targeted and comprehensive school improvement plan, which is focused on equity and culturally responsive practices, that result in improved outcomes for students;

  • Assist in the supervision and evaluation of the instructional staff in the development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment;

  • Implement consistent and rigorous standards-aligned curriculum supported by high-quality instructional resources;

  • Provide staff development of all staff to provide students with powerful teaching and learning experiences that prepare them for college and career;

  • Establish a strong system of professional learning that supports individual school needs and is linked to the District’s Theory of Action;

  • Support the continued development of collaborative educator teams that regularly use student performance data to inform teaching practice and school-wide improvement;

  • Ensure that the school provides an individualized learning experience that is tailored to student’s academic, social-emotional, cultural, and behavioral needs;

  • Assist in the recruitment, interview process, hiring, and retention of high-quality educators;

  • Work closely with all stakeholders to form a community partnership of educators and parents;

  • Promote effective communication with families and the community;

  • Utilize culturally sensitive practices to ensure that all families are welcome and can contribute to the educational process;

  • Serve as a model for continuous learning and reflective practice;

  • Assist in the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of co-curricular activities and student activities;

  • Provide supervision of after-school, evening, and weekend activities as necessary;

  • Assist in the planning and supervision of student safety practices and procedures;

  • Assist the principal in the development and implementation of the budget concerning personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum;

  • Assist in the planning, direction, and implementation of all scheduling activities;

  • Participate in administrative meetings and such other meetings as are required to facilitate the educational program;

  • Promote and maintain high standards for staff, students, and community members to the Theory of Action of the school and district;

  • Provide staff with meaningful feedback through the supervision and evaluation process that accelerates school and district improvement;

  • Contribute to the development and sustainability of Fitchburg Public School’s Theory of Action;

  • Function as a contributing instructional leader on the District Instructional Team;

  • Ensure effective usage of school supplies and for timely distribution, monitoring, and acquisition of proper and pertinent textbooks;

  • Act as building principal in the absence of the principal;

  • Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and submitting all reports, as necessary, to the Principal and/or his/her designee;

  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities according to school policy;
  • Provide an environment for learning experiences as guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements, while creating an environment that is conducive to student learning;
  • Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement;
  • Be responsible for modeling innovative approaches, and instructional strategies including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn;
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by district policy and administrative regulation;
  • Promote equity and appreciation of diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning, including, implementing specific strategies for students with special needs, with 504 plans and/or English learners (EL);
  • Implement the district's mission, strategic plan, values, commitments, philosophy of education, and instructional standards and objectives;
  • Implements all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
  • Maintain and improve professional competence through attendance at professional development events, and by self-generated activities that meet district expectations and the requirements for recertification.

Terms of Employment/Salary/Work Year:    

As negotiated by the Fitchburg School Committee and the Fitchburg Administrators Association (FAA). The work year is 210 days.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of NCBC (fingerprinting) and CORI prior to your start of employment.
