What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher Aide position at FISHBURNE MILITARY SCHOOL?
Fishburne Military School (FMS), the oldest and smallest all-male military boarding school in Virginia, seeks a part-time Teaching Aide in the Middle School for the remainder of the 2025-2026 academic year. This is an opportunity for an educator looking to provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support to adolescents in grades 6-8 in conjunction with their classroom teachers. Major duties and responsibilities involve providing direct instruction to individuals or small groups of middle schoolers, supervising middle schoolers during assigned periods within a variety of school environments, assisting teachers with skills practice, overseeing outdoor activities, supporting classroom discipline, and performing a range of clerical duties for the Middle School Director.
FMS serves young men in grades 6 – 12 with an optimal enrollment between 125 – 150 cadets. The Middle School was founded in the Fall of 2024 and has tripled in size over the past year. All candidates must embrace FMS’ commitment to providing young men with an engaging, attuned, and differentiated educational experience that leverages military custom and culture to promote student competence and confidence. Teaching candidates do not need to have prior military experience, just a deep commitment to educating boys in a boarding school. Attire for teaching faculty is business casual. If a veteran, the teacher may wear their appropriate service uniform. As FMS is a military school, all teachers must support FMS’ unique education model and adhere to policies that promote student growth in the context of cadet life. This includes supporting reporting of cadet infractions, attending weekly promotion ceremonies/formations, providing extra support to cadets in academic need, and communicating with cadet families about the progress of their son. This position reports to the Middle School Director.
The ideal candidate would have a background in secondary education, special education, literacy coaching, or counseling psychology as well as experience working with children. Compensation begins at $16 per hour with potential increases based on experience and credentials. Interested persons should send a letter of interest and resume to Mr. Adam Siler, Academic Dean at asiler@fishburne.org _____________________________________________________________________________________ Fishburne Military School Located in downtown Waynesboro, Virginia, in the bucolic Shenandoah Valley 30 minutes from Charlottesville, Fishburne Military School is a private non-profit non-sectarian boarding school for boys in grades 7 – 12. It is governed by an independent board of trustees. Fishburne is the oldest military boarding school in Virginia (1879) and the board is committed to its small scale and all male mission. When founded, FMS was modeled after nearby Virginia Military Institute and Fishburne’s iconic barracks quadrangle reflects this. As a non-sectarian school, the Army JROTC program is part of US Army Cadet Command and rated an honor unit of distinction. FMS is accredited by VAIS and is a member of NAIS and TABS.
Fishburne embraces its brand … We see what’s great in you. The student body is comprised of a core of young men with an affinity for the military and a desire to get an early start on this career. Along with this group are many other boys who were overlooked in their previous settings and not growing to their potential. With its small scale and structure, individual attention, and dedicated faculty and military staff, all of whom understand leveraging relationships to develop young men; Fishburne excels at enabling its cadets to reach their full potential. FMS has a conventional college prep curriculum, but one which is evolving in new and exciting ways with community partners. Required athletics/physical training produce not just resilient young men but several each year who go on to play collegiate sports. The majority of FMS graduates will go on to civilian higher education. A significant number each year do matriculate to one of the US Service Academies or military colleges.
