What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School Science Teacher position at FISHBURNE MILITARY SCHOOL?
Title: Science Instructor (full-time) position begins 1 JULY 2026
Fishburne Military School (FMS), the oldest and smallest all-male military boarding school in Virginia, seeks a full-time science instructor capable of teaching Physics, Chemistry, and/or AP Chemistry to upper schoolers for the 2026-27 school year. A seasoned instructor with an advanced degree could become department chair. A coaching background in soccer, cross country, basketball, or baseball is desirable. FMS serves young men in grades 6 – 12 with an optimal enrollment between 125 – 150 cadets. Day students typically comprise one quarter of the student body. This is an opportunity for an experienced science teacher to serve in a timeless and effective setting for the development of young men, yet one that is increasingly unique in American society.
Major duties and responsibilities involve teaching four sections of science with two – three preparations to cadets in grades 9-12. The ideal candidate would have experience and interest in supporting cadets as an academic advisor, sponsoring a student-led club, and supporting the residential life program. All candidates must embrace FMS’ commitment to providing young men with an engaging, attuned, and differentiated educational experience that leverages military custom and culture to promote student competence and confidence. Teaching candidates do not need to have prior military experience, just a deep commitment to educating boys in a boarding school. Attire for teaching faculty is business casual. If a veteran, the teacher may wear their appropriate service uniform. As FMS is a military school, all teachers must support FMS’ unique education model and adhere to policies that promote student growth in the context of cadet life. This includes supporting reporting of cadet infractions, attending weekly promotion ceremonies/formations, providing extra support to cadets in academic need, and communicating with cadet families about the progress of their son. This position reports to the Academic Dean.
The ideal candidate possesses 3-5 years of teaching experience as well as an undergraduate degree in science. A graduate degree is desirable. Experience using leading technologies such as Google Suite and Blackbaud education software is a plus. Compensation and benefits are consistent with other small boarding schools. Housing is a possibility. Interested persons should send a letter of interest and resume to Mr. Adam Siler, Academic Dean at asiler@fishburne.org _____________________________________________________________________________________ Fishburne Military School
Located in downtown Waynesboro, Virginia, in the bucolic Shenandoah Valley 30 minutes from Charlottesville, Fishburne Military School is a private non-profit non-sectarian boarding school for boys in grades 7 – 12. It is governed by an independent board of trustees. Fishburne is the oldest military boarding school in Virginia (1879) and the board is committed to its small scale and all male mission. When founded, FMS was modeled after nearby Virginia Military Institute and Fishburne’s iconic barracks quadrangle reflects this. As a non-sectarian school, the Army JROTC program is part of US Army Cadet Command and rated an honor unit of distinction. FMS is accredited by VAIS and is a member of NAIS and TABS.
Fishburne embraces its brand … We see what’s great in you. The student body is comprised of a core of young men with an affinity for the military and a desire to get an early start on this career. Along with this group are many other boys who were overlooked in their previous settings and not growing to their potential. With its small scale and structure, individual attention, and dedicated faculty and military staff, all of whom understand leveraging relationships to develop young men; Fishburne excels at enabling its cadets to reach their full potential. FMS has a conventional college prep curriculum, but one which is evolving in new and exciting ways with community partners. Required athletics/physical training produce not just resilient young men but several each year who go on to play collegiate sports. The majority of FMS graduates will go on to civilian higher education. A significant number each year do matriculate to one of the US Service Academies or military colleges. Some boys may elect military enlistment or technical training before pursuing college or a career.
FMS is a small close-knit community that feels like family and this is certainly true of the employees. Most FMS administrators, faculty, and staff are dedicated educators without military experience. The personnel of the Army JROTC Department and Commandant’s Office all possess military backgrounds and direct the Corps of Cadets. Fishburne offers a wonderful opportunity for a true professional with heart to join this team as an science instructor
