Company Description The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute conducts applied research focused on assessing and restoring ecosystems. The Marine Fisheries-Independent Monitoring program has a particular emphasis on estuarine and marine fisheries. The institute also studies aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, imperiled species, and red tide events to inform conservation and management decisions. In addition to scientific research, the institute develops information science tools to analyze, manage, and share research data and findings. Outreach and educational activities support all programs, ensuring that results are accessible to partners, stakeholders, and the public.

Role Description This full-time, on-site Biological Administrator role is based in Port Charlotte, FL. The position oversees field and laboratory research on fisheries populations, habitats, and ecosystem health, ensuring projects are planned, implemented, and completed on schedule. Responsibilities include coordinating and supervising field sampling, data collection, and data quality control, as well as analyzing and interpreting biological and environmental data. The role involves preparing scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, and management briefs, and presenting findings to agency leadership, partner organizations, and community groups. The position also mentors staff, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, contributes to grant proposals, and supports outreach activities related to fisheries management and conservation.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in fisheries science, aquatic ecology, or marine biology, including experience with population assessment, stock monitoring, and habitat evaluation.
  • Proficiency in field research methods such as sampling design, gear deployment, specimen handling, and environmental data collection in marine and/or freshwater systems.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including statistical analysis, data management, and use of relevant software (e.g., R, GIS, database tools).
  • Experience leading teams or projects, including staff supervision, scheduling, training, and promoting a safe and inclusive field and laboratory environment.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports, scientific publications, and outreach materials, and for presenting to scientific and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with agency partners, academic institutions, and community stakeholders to support research, conservation, and management goals.
  • Master’s degree or higher in fisheries science, marine biology, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related field (or equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience).
  • Willingness and ability to work in varied field conditions, operate small vessels or vessels of similar size (training can be provided), and comply with all safety protocols.
  • Experience with grant writing, project budgeting, and reporting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ecosystem restoration, imperiled species management, or harmful algal bloom (e.g., red tide) research is an asset.
