Construction Controller
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Construction Controller to lead the financial operations of our growing construction organization. This role is responsible for overseeing accounting functions, managing Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, maintaining the General Ledger (GL), supporting budget creation and forecasting, and ensuring accurate financial reporting across multiple projects and entities.
The ideal candidate has strong construction industry accounting experience, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to partner with operations leaders to improve project profitability and financial performance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, and general accounting functions.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Maintain and reconcile the General Ledger (GL) and supporting schedules.
- Ensure accuracy of project cost reporting and revenue recognition.
Work-in-Progress (WIP) Management
- Prepare and manage monthly WIP schedules and reporting.
- Analyze project performance, percent-complete calculations, under/over billings, and earned revenue.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Operations teams to ensure accurate project forecasting and cost tracking.
- Identify financial risks, cost overruns, and margin concerns proactively.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead annual budget creation and ongoing forecasting processes.
- Develop departmental and project-level budgets.
- Monitor actual performance against budgets and provide variance analysis.
- Support strategic planning and cash flow forecasting initiatives.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Coordinate external audits, tax preparation, and lender reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Assist with insurance reporting, bonding, and banking relationships.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
- Partner with executive leadership to support business growth and operational decision-making.
- Drive process improvements and system efficiencies within accounting and project reporting functions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA or CMA preferred.
- 5 years of accounting leadership experience within the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction accounting principles
- Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
- General Ledger (GL) management
- Budget creation and forecasting
- Job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience with construction ERP/accounting software such as Sage, Viewpoint, Foundation, CMiC, or similar platforms.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
