About The Opportunity

This is for an open position with the FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

This position serves a dual role with the potential for responsibilities and assignments in both the Rates Department and Regulatory Reporting within State Finance & Regulatory organization. This position will provide support for the development of certain rate filings and compliance filings, which requires broad interaction with other organizations, including State Operations, Legal, Claims, Rates & Regulatory Affairs, Engineering Services, Finance and Accounting. The position will also interact externally with the NJ Board of Public Utilities, which requires excellent communication skills. This position is part of the New Jersey State Finance and Regulatory organization and reports to the Supervisor, Regulatory Reporting.

This position is in the New Jersey Rates & Regulatory Affairs group. The preferred reporting location is Akron, OH, however other reporting locations will be considered with travel as needed.

The estimated salary for this position is $77,500-$109,000

The estimated salary for this position if based in New Jersey (only) is $93,000-$125,000

Responsibilities include:

  • Support efforts to ensure that FirstEnergy’s New Jersey distribution utility, Jersey Central Power & Light, receives adequate and timely recovery of its costs.
  • Analyze and develop various pricing mechanisms established to facilitate appropriate cost recovery.
  • Establish regulatory rapport with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ Staff and other members of the external regulatory community.
  • Understand and utilize various ratemaking concepts, including revenue requirements, cost allocation, cost of service, rates of return, regulatory accounting and the time value of money.
  • Adhere to well-defined practices and procedures.
  • Conduct business-specific research, analyze data, interpret results and make recommendations.
  • Meet internal and external customer needs by providing sound and responsive service.
  • Actively seek formal and informal learning opportunities to better understand business processes and procedures.
  • Exercise sound decision making by developing alternatives and recommendations to improve business processes.
  • Develop effective working relationships with employees within own work group while also establishing a professional network.
  • Actively represent and advocate for the Company’s interests.
  • Preparing, writing, and validating required regulatory reports, data requests, or other required regulatory requests
  • Coordinating reviews of materials with data providers, subject matter experts, leadership, legal, etc. to ensure accuracy and consistency with other related or past reports
  • Assessing compliance for all state regulatory commitments with government regulated policies, regulations, and standards through regulatory and field audits, data submittals, and spot checks
  • Identifying and coordinating process improvements and best practices to support compliance with all regulatory commitments across State Operations
  • Reviewing and interpreting rules generated from regulatory entities such as state commissions, in coordination with FirstEnergy Legal departments
  • Monitoring, reviewing, and analyzing gaps between state rules and existing processes, and making recommendations for gap closure
  • Assist higher level specialists in the completion of more complex reports, as needed
  • Performing various required outage reports for regulatory entities during storm and emergency situations, and rotate on call duties during non-storm periods

Qualifications include:

  • Works safely according to company policies and procedures
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Mathematics or related discipline is required. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience is required. Relevant experience will include Rates, Regulatory (FERC or State), Finance, or Accounting is preferred.
  • Able to effectively manage and prioritize projects of various complexities.
  • Accountable for timely and accurate completion of work products.
  • Enthusiastic team player who is flexible and open to new ideas.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities, including problem solving, decision making, and identifying process improvements
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Teams)
  • Delivers quality, accurate work within established deadlines
  • Must be willing to travel for business to other company locations and the state capital for hearings, meetings and other activities, which may include over-night travel.
  • Ability to perform after hours, on-call required outage reporting activities for regulatory entities during storm and emergency situations on a rotating basis
