Assistant Teachers foster welcoming, interactive, and safe learning environments that support each child’s health and development while also utilizing effective classroom management techniques to engage children and inspire learning.
Key Responsibilities: In conjunction with the Teacher, consistently demonstrate the indicators of high-quality early childhood classrooms outlined in the NAEYC Accreditation Standards for early learning programs, including but not limited to:
- Cultivating learning through the provision of classroom materials that stimulate learning, while meeting children’s needs and interests, rotating these materials frequently to encourage children’s curiosity, engagement, and skill progression.
- Nurturing learning by maintaining an organized and safe classroom environment that supports small group, peer-to-peer, and individualized experiences.
- Monitoring and preparing the classroom to ensure that the materials, furniture, and environment are accessible, safe, and promote each child’s health and development.
- Providing basic caregiving duties and support; assisting with personal care and providing physical care assistance, as necessary.
- Prepping and serving meals using family-style dining; modeling appropriate hygiene practices and healthy eating habits.
- Engaging in and modeling the use of positive discipline practices that foster children’s choice, autonomy, and meets their individual needs and level of development.
- Participating in learning activities and redirecting students as necessary to engage each child in the learning process; promoting inclusion and achievement.
- Providing one-on-one and small group instruction as designed by the Teacher and in support of planned lessons, activities, and individualizations.
- Supporting the creation of a classroom culture of respect, kindness, encouragement, and acceptance with and among children.
- Keeping children safe and healthy at all times by effectively implementing active supervision and positive classroom management practices.
- Completing classroom documentation tasks, as assigned, in an effective and timely manner.
- Being a representative of NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct and a model of professionalism and seeks out professional development opportunities for personal growth.
- Other duties as assigned, when necessary to meet the needs of children and families.
Minimum qualifications for this position are:
- Available to work Mon-Fri from 6:45am - 2:15pm.
- Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or closely related field is required.
- Minimum one-year teaching experience in an early childhood setting.
- Some knowledge of theories and practices of Early Childhood.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to build positive, professional relationships with diverse populations.
- Valid driver’s license/proof of auto insurance/required.
Physical Requirements:
- The ability to lift up to approximately 50 lbs.
- The ability to walk/run, squat/kneel, push/pull, bend/twist, sit on the floor, and see/hear/speak with children to ensure the child’s safety and health.
- The ability to reach up/lift items overhead, to floor level and back up.
- The ability to engage in outdoor play.
- The ability to assist with serving lunch.
- The ability to assist children with bathroom needs, including changing diapers/soiled clothing.
