What are the responsibilities and job description for the Underwriter I position at First Source FCU?
Position Summary
This position is responsible for underwriting consumer and home equity loans within designated lending authority and in accordance with credit union policies and procedures.
Essential Job Functions
- Underwrite consumer loan applications to include but not limited to secured loans, unsecured loans, credit cards, and home equity loans.
- Ensure each loan request is thoroughly analyzed to determine creditworthiness of the potential borrower and assess overall risk to the Credit Union.
- Ensure that all loan requests comply with Credit Union lending standards, guidelines, and applicable federal and state rules and regulations.
- Make underwriting decisions within stipulated time frame and individual lending authority.
- Clearly communicate lending decisions to the appropriate parties and, when a loan request cannot be approved, provide alternative options and guidance to help members improve creditworthiness.
- Maintain individual lending authority level 6 or higher.
- For loans exceeding individual lending authority, make recommendations to Underwriting Manager, or any employee with the appropriate individual underwriting authority.
- Effectively communicate decisions to appropriate parties both verbally and through the loan origination platform.
- Actively contribute to and support Underwriting and the Credit Union achieve goals.
- Provide support to the other areas of the credit union.
- Required to participate in First Source Federal Credit Union events as well as designated Community events.
- Required to attend or participate in necessary compliance training, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy, OFAC, and Privacy.
- Required to attend training sessions as appropriate.
- Required to travel as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- High School plus 3-5 years related experience OR related business degree
- Strong communication and analytical skills with a refined attention to detail
- Ability to perform well and keep up responsibilities in a high volume, fast paced working environment
- Must have the ability to multitask while staying organized
- Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to deliver strongly supported decisions
- Proficient computer skills with a high level of computer literacy for various core operating systems
- Must present a professional appearance
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed
