Title: Director of Spiritual Formation and Outreach (DSFO)

Working Relationships: The Director of Spiritual Formation and Outreach (DSFO) reports directly to the Pastor. Works with the Pastor, Staff and the Christian Education Committee. The DSFO will also recruit, equip and work alongside a team of volunteers/lay leaders.

I. Summary:

First Presbyterian Church of Marquette (FPC) is seeking a DSFO with a vision for spiritual formation, congregational revitalization, and expanded outreach. We are a small church of approximately 125 members located on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Marquette is well-known as a desirable place to live for its outdoor beauty and adventures and for being ranked in the top ten best small town cultural scenes by USA Today.

This position is responsible for the development of our Christian faith formation for all ages: children, youth and adults. Our current programs include approximately 15 children/youth. We seek a Director aligned with the inclusive theology of the PC(USA) who embodies the gracious hospitality, teachings, and love of Christ. In addition, the DSFO will assist the congregation in reaching outside the walls of the church and welcoming new people into the community of the church.

II. Our Vision & Values:

FPC adopted a new Vision & Values Statement in 2025.

We imagined the following picture of what First Presbyterian Church might be like by 2029 with God’s grace and our obedience:

We are a community of faith with

Worship that is vibrant and diverse

Community that is authentic and inclusive

Spiritual Formation that is holistic and rooted in Scripture

Mission that is focused on the marginalized and ranges from local to global

Our Vision Expanded for Spiritual Formation:

Our spiritual growth is a priority for people in the church. FPC will offer many ways for people to learn and deepen their relationships with God - including Scripture study, book discussions, prayer gatherings, age & stage groups, leadership development opportunities. We will engage with ways to grow not only at FPC but also in our lives outside of the church. We will grow in a breadth of spiritual practices that nurture our connection with God. All this will shape our values, priorities, and the ways we live our daily lives.

III. Purpose of the Role1. Deepen our Spiritual Formation and Congregational Life

● Rebuild and expand Christian education and spiritual formation opportunities for all ages.

● Support lay leadership development and volunteer engagement.

● Strengthen worship, youth and family activities, and small-group opportunities.

● Produce and publish communication materials for the ministry programming, including social media, as a method of outreach (with the help of our Social Media and Marketing Committee).

● Invite community members and families into a deeper connection with our church through creative and fresh ways.

IV. Primary Responsibilities:

● Oversee and develop Spiritual Formation ministries and leadership for all ages (children, youth, adult). Creative and holistic formation is encouraged: Sunday School, age & stage groups, book discussions, prayer gatherings, community gatherings, creation care, etc.

● Select curriculum and develop programming in collaboration with the Pastor and with Session’s approval. Recent curriculum included Follow Me (PCUSA published), Illustrated Ministries, and Sanctified Art.

● Coordinate outreach initiatives, communications and community connections. Regularly communicate the ministry happenings to the church, to parents/families, and the greater community.

● Oversee Children & Youth Programming including Vacation Bible School, Confirmation class with the Pastor, Christmas Programs, plays and other opportunities. Maintain a relationship with the local church camp of Presbytery Point.

● Engage with the Youth Mission trips - take high school youth into new environments to serve and learn acts of Christ’s love through hands on work, quiet reflection, and emotional challenges. Triennium every 3rd year. Assist in fundraising for the Youth Mission trip: Cookie Sales, Chili Cook-off, etc.

● Oversee the Nursery area and staffing.
