Position Summary
The Executive Director of Finance provides strategic financial stewardship, leadership, and
oversight for the church’s financial operations. This role ensures financial integrity,
transparency, and stewardship aligned with the mission and values of First Presbyterian
Church. The Executive Director of Finance manages budgeting, accounting, reporting,
compliance, and risk management, while supporting ministry leaders with sound financial
guidance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute financial strategies that support the church’s mission and long-
term sustainability
- Advise senior leadership and board on financial planning, forecasting, and risk
management
- Translate vision into actionable financial plans and resource allocation
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with ministry and operational leaders
- Monitor budget performance and provide regular variance analysis
- Develop rolling forecasts and long-term financial plans
Accounting & Reporting
- Oversee and maintain the integrity of all accounting functions and systems including
general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
- Prepare and present monthly financial statements to the Finance Committee, including
variance analysis and narrative context
- Develop dashboards and visual summaries that make financial health immediately
understandable to non-finance individuals
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and applicable laws
- Manage annual audits and liaise with external auditors
- Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets
- Oversee tax filings, including 990 (if applicable), and regulatory reportingCash & Asset Management
- Monitor cash flow and maintain appropriate reserves
- Oversee investment accounts and endowment funds
- Ensure proper handling of tithes, offerings, and donations
Team Leadership
- Lead and develop finance staff and volunteers
- Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and service
- Provide financial training and support to ministry leaders
Systems & Process Improvement
- Evaluate and improve financial systems, tools, and processes
- Implement best practices in financial management and reporting
- Leverage technology for efficiency and transparency
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (CPA or MBA optional)
- 7–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Experience in nonprofit, church, or mission-driven organization strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting and financial management
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- High level of integrity and commitment to stewardship
- Excellent communication skills, both financial and non-financial
- Ability to lead teams and collaborate across ministries
