Job Title: Lead Designer – Telecommunications
Location: Houston, TX
Schedule: 9/80 & hybrid (3 days in the office / 2 days from home, with every other Friday off)
Job Summary
The Lead Designer – Telecommunications is responsible for planning, developing, and reviewing telecommunications and control systems design work for medium-sized projects. This role produces technical drawings, design documentation, and cost estimates while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, codes, and standards. The Lead Designer collaborates closely with clients and internal teams, facilitates technical discussions, and reviews and approves drawings, calculations, and bid summaries. This position also addresses complex technical challenges and provides mentorship to engineering staff.
This role is designated as part-time telework in accordance with the company’s global telework policy and requires a minimum of three days per week of in-person attendance at the assigned office or project site. In-office schedules will be determined collaboratively with the supervisor and project or functional leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute independent telecommunications design work, applying sound engineering judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for medium-sized projects supporting a global business unit
- Lead the design, development, modification, and evaluation of telecommunications systems, components, and processes in accordance with Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards, guides, and company standard application programs
- Develop conceptual and detailed designs for telecommunications projects, including those with specialized or unique requirements
- Review, approve, and ensure the quality and accuracy of drawings, calculations, technical documentation, and bid summaries
- Communicate complex technical issues and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions to project leadership and upper management
- Support the preparation of project estimates, staffing plans, and schedules
- Interpret and apply new or specialized regulations, codes, standards, and performance criteria
- Coordinate with client representatives to obtain approval of telecommunications design aspects, as directed
- Conduct or lead technical studies on new telecommunications methods, materials, and technologies
- Mentor and support the professional development of telecommunications engineering personnel through on-the-job training
- Contribute to and participate in technical training and educational programs, as assigned
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related discipline (or international equivalent) with 10–13 years of relevant experience
- OR
- 14–17 years of relevant telecommunications engineering or design experience in lieu of a degree
Required Knowledge and Skills
- RCDD certification preferred
- Strong knowledge of telecommunications systems, equipment, and design methodologies within the ICT–Telecommunications discipline
- Understanding of technical and cost considerations related to the selection of telecommunications design features
- Experience developing ICT telecommunications network topologies, including DAS, data centers, OSI model applications, rack layouts, and horizontal distribution systems
- Proficiency with industry-standard software tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of ERRCS/DAS and security systems, including their integration with ICT–Telecommunications, is desirable
