Overview
It is the duty of the Sexton to maintain the building’s day to day cleaning, and light repairs in and around the facility. Coordinate with the Chair of Facilities and Finance to engage appropriate vendors for necessary in-depth repairs including electrical and plumbing.
Weekly Cleaning 85%
– Monitor thermostats along with the Pastor and Administrative Assistant. Turn up heat in the winter before special events, then turn down after. Turn on AC in the summer before special events, then turn down after.
– There are 3 restrooms. Toilets and sinks need to be cleaned a minimum of 2X per week, as well as before and after all special events. Soap and towel dispensers should be checked at a minimum of 2X per week, as well as before and after special events.
– All floors need to be cleaned weekly as needed a minimum of 2X per week by Saturday. In coordination with the schedule of events.
o Hard floors in the office, lower-level hallways, community room, kitchen, and bathrooms should be swept, dry mopped, then wet mopped.
o Carpet floors in the Sanctuary, the parlor, and the pastor’s office should be vacuumed. It is important for the Sanctuary to be vacuumed on Saturday evening before Sunday morning service.
o Additional floor cleaning will be required depending on weather, and event scheduling throughout the week. The pastor will communicate additional needs.
– At least 1X per week on Sunday. Trash is managed based on event scheduling at the church.
– Light snow removal duties will be assigned by the Chair of Facilities & Finance as needed.
Additional Duties 15%
– Needs to be evaluated at least 1X per week; items to check, stove and ovens, hood area, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, and counter tops. Kitchen items should be cleaned 2X per year, unless otherwise as necessary for cleanliness and safety.
o Double check that the stove & dishwasher are off when in the building; church liaison will check after events and greeters will check after fellowship following Sunday service. Coordinate with the Serve Safe representative from the church.
– Maintain levels of necessary items like toilet paper, soap, paper towels, cleaning sprays, floor cleaner, etc.
– Glass and sills need to be cleaned 1X per year. Radiators, base boards, and other surfaces should be cleaned 1X per year as well. – Deep Clean
– Wipe down bathroom stalls 2X per year, and additionally as needed.
Educational Requirements
The Sexton is required to have a High School Diploma or equivalency. Able to pass a CORI/SORI check.
Supervision
The Sexton reports to the Pastor for day-to-day scheduling, task management, and oversight. For facilities duties, including special projects and equipment functionality the Sexton will take direction from the Chair of Facilities & Finance. The Personnel Committee (including a representative of Facilities & Finance) will be responsible for communicating performance improvement plans, employment status and will (in consultation with the Pastor) provide an annual review. Inter-office concerns with other staff (including the Pastor) and requests from members of the congregation should be brought to the attention of the Personnel Committee. The Pastor will coordinate with the Sexton on special event needs and provide feedback on tasks that need to be accomplished. If duties cannot be accomplished due to illness or other reasons the Sexton needs to communicate with the Pastor and the Personnel Committee directly to develop a resolution.
Scheduling
The Sexton is contracted for 15-20 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible based on the needs of First Congregational Church UCC, Lee. There are a few key tasks that need to accomplished before and after service however the rest of the week is at the discretion of the Sexton and the Pastor.
Benefits
This is a part-time position without health insurance, paid sick leave, or personal time. Vacation time is accrued based on a standardized formula for all staff. The Sexton will , 2 weeks at 15 hours per week. There are 6 paid holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Any additional hours worked beyond 20 in one week for special projects will be paid at the same hourly rate as negotiated in the employment contract.
Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour
