About the Role

WTLV/WJXX, the TEGNA-owned NBC and ABC affiliates in Jacksonville, Florida, are transforming the way we gather and present news, and we're looking for a Story Desk Manager to help lead that evolution.

As the newsroom's central coordinator for daily news coverage, you'll oversee story discovery, assignment planning and breaking news execution while helping shape how stories are delivered across streaming, digital, social and broadcast platforms. This role is ideal for an experienced local television newsroom leader with a strong assignment desk or content desk background who thrives in fast-paced breaking news environments and enjoys helping journalists produce impactful local journalism.

You'll work alongside newsroom leadership to own the day's biggest stories, coordinate resources, develop enterprise coverage and ensure every platform is working together to serve our audience. We're looking for a collaborative leader who can manage logistics, coach journalists, respond calmly during breaking news and help build the newsroom of the future.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily coverage decisions and reporter assignments to ensure competitive, impactful coverage across all platforms.
  • Coordinate newsroom logistics, staffing and resources to own the day's biggest stories.
  • Determine the best platform, presentation and timeline for every story from planning through publication.
  • Plan coverage for upcoming news cycles while identifying opportunities for enterprise reporting.
  • Lead regular editorial meetings and story check-ins throughout the day.
  • Partner with newsroom leaders to manage breaking news coverage with urgency, accuracy and strong editorial judgment.
  • Use audience insights and digital performance metrics to inform content decisions and maximize audience reach.
  • Ensure engaging, accurate and impactful storytelling across broadcast, website, mobile app, streaming and social platforms.
  • Coach reporters, producers, photographers and Story Desk Editors on story development, source building, editorial decision-making and digital best practices.
  • Review scripts, digital content and video for accuracy, AP Style, fairness, ethics and journalistic quality.
  • Foster collaboration across the newsroom while helping evolve workflows and newsroom operations.
  • Uphold TEGNA's journalistic standards and commitment to serving the community.

Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in a local television newsroom with responsibility for assignment planning, newsroom operations or editorial leadership.
  • Superior news judgment and the ability to make fast, sound editorial decisions under pressure.
  • Proven record of success leading breaking news coverage and coordinating newsroom logistics.
  • Experience managing assignment desks, content desks or cross-functional newsroom teams.
  • Strong understanding of newsroom operations, editorial planning and daily news coverage.
  • Experience helping improve newsroom workflows and content gathering systems.
  • Demonstrated success coaching journalists and developing high-performing newsroom teams.
  • Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with the Jacksonville market is a plus.

Required Skills

  • Experience managing assignment desks, assignment editors, Story Desk Editors or newsroom logistics in a local television newsroom.
  • Proven ability to coordinate breaking news coverage and newsroom workflows across broadcast, streaming, digital and social platforms.
  • Strong editorial judgment with experience making fast, high-pressure news decisions.
  • Demonstrated success assigning stories, developing enterprise coverage and coordinating daily newsroom operations.
  • Experience coaching journalists to develop strong local contacts, source networks and impactful community stories.
  • Working knowledge of digital publishing workflows and multi-platform storytelling.
  • Experience using audience insights to inform editorial decisions and improve content reach.
  • Impeccable organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, journalism ethics and newsroom best practices.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and breaking news situations.
