The Masonry Superintendent is responsible for overseeing multiple concurrent commercial masonry projects, managing foremen and field crews, and ensuring successful project delivery on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This senior leadership role requires masonry knowledge, strong project management capabilities, and the ability to coordinate complex operations across multiple job sites while maintaining strict safety and quality compliance.
Key ResponsibilitiesCrew Leadership & Management
- Manage a team of Foremen, including subcontractors, work schedules, project progress, and resource allocation to maintain field performance.
- Monitors and manages field productivity and performance, addresses issues promptly.
- Lead preconstruction planning and coordinate with project management team, general contractors and project stakeholders
- Balance priorities across projects to optimize productivity and profitability
- Provide daily direction and oversight through regular site visits and operational guidance
- Review and approve daily reports, time sheets, and material requests
- Mentor foremen's leadership and technical skills through performance evaluations and coaching
- Address personnel issues promptly and ensure foremen have necessary resources to succeed
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
- Create cost estimates for labor, supplies, materials, and other project costs.
- Direct and approve work plans and/or approach to executing project plans,
- Maintain a positive client experience with weekly onsite meetings to review performance
- Manage relationships with specialty subcontractors
- Responsible for job closeout and inspection of all jobs to ensure completeness and minimal punch list items.
- Maintain highest masonry craftsmanship standards across all work.
- Conduct ongoing inspections to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Verify proper jointing, alignment, plumbness, and level details.
- Partner with Safety Operations Manager to maintain comprehensive safety programs
- Ensure foremen enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies across all sites
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and sitespecific safety plans
- Ensure proper PPE use and maintain safe working conditions
- Stop work for unsafe conditions and investigate incidents and implement corrective actions
- Coordinate with Safety Operations Manager on training and compliance
- Maintain daily log for job site operations including progress photos in Raken for FCC internal reporting
- Ensure proper documentation of scope changes, delays, and weather impacts
- Submit all written or digital reporting required by general contractor
- Communicate project status, scope changes, and challenges to project management and estimating
- Participate in project meetings and maintain strong general contractor relationships
- Develop and maintain project schedules coordinated with general contractor requirements
- Monitor labor, materials, and equipment costs against budgets; identify issues early
- Coordinate deliveries and equipment with warehouse; optimize crew sizes for productivity
- Review purchase orders and invoices for accuracy prior to submitting for reimbursements
- Alert management to potential overruns or delays early
- Minimize material waste through efficient planning
- Analyze completed projects to compare estimated costs vs. actual costs, and account for discrepancies
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 8 years as journeyman mason in commercial construction
- Minimum 5 years in supervisory role leading masonry crews
- Expert proficiency reading blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings
- Proven ability performing accurate layout for complex masonry work
- Strong leadership, problemsolving/decision making, communication, and active listening skills
- Proficient in written and verbal English
- Extensive knowledge and application of local, state, and federal construction regulations
- Manage time effectively and utilizes delegation, prioritization, and ability to multitask
- Mastery of brick bonds (running, common, Flemish, English)
- Proficiency in corners, arches, corbels, and specialty features
- Knowledge of mortar types, mixing ratios, and grouting procedures
- Experience with tube, frame, and Hydro Mobile scaffolding systems
- Knowledge of masonry construction budgeting best practices
- Strong planning skills including design execution, resource allocation and contingencies
- Extensive understanding of construction equipment including safe operating practices and signs of maintenance issues
- Proficient with iPad/tablet for daily reporting in Raken or similar software
- Ability to take and upload photos for documentation and progress tracking
- Competent reading and writing emails for professional communication
- Basic smartphone skills for calls, texts, and photo sharing
- OSHA 30hour Construction Safety certification required
- First Aid/CPR certification required
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable
- EM385 certification
- Forklift and aerial lift certifications
- Experience with federal, municipal, or institutional projects
- Lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly
- Work in various weather conditions
- Climb ladders and scaffolding up to 40 feet
- Wear required PPE for extended periods
- Project completion on or ahead of schedule
- Zero losttime safety incidents
- Quality ratings of 95% or higher on inspections
- Labor productivity meeting or exceeding estimates
- Material waste below 5%
