What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Estimator position at FireSeeds and Careers?
We’re hiring an experienced Estimator / Senior Estimator to take a leading role in pursuing and securing work—primarily public sector projects—while supporting select private/commercial bids. This position will help backfill a long-tenured estimator nearing retirement and support our continued growth in heavy civil and wet utilities. You’ll collaborate closely with our Director of Construction, Director of Operations, Project Managers, and Superintendents, and influence Palmetto’s pricing strategy and competitiveness.
What You’ll Do
- Lead estimating for SCDOT, municipal, and other public infrastructure projects, as well as select private/commercial sitework opportunities.
- Review plans/specs, perform detailed quantity takeoffs, and conduct jobsite visits to verify conditions and constructability.
- Build complete estimates using B2W (or similar), including labor, equipment, materials, subs, and production assumptions.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate subcontractor and vendor pricing; maintain strong industry relationships.
- Prepare and submit accurate, on-time bids with all required documentation, forms, and schedules.
- Partner with PMs and Superintendents for seamless project handoff and support change-order pricing.
- Analyze bid performance, hit ratios, competition, and market trends to refine pricing strategy.
- Contribute to process improvements and mentor junior team members supporting takeoffs and estimating.
What You Bring
Education & Experience
- 5–10 years estimating heavy civil/sitework projects (public works private commercial/industrial).
- Bachelor’s in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of wet utilities (water/sewer) or a clear aptitude and desire to develop this capability.
Technical Skills
- Experience with B2W, HeavyBid, or similar estimating software.
- Proficiency with digital takeoff tools (Bluebeam, Agtek, TBC, Trimble, etc.).
- Strong Excel skills and ability to interpret civil/site plans, utility drawings, specs, and geotechnical reports.
