DIVISION MEDICAL DIRECTOR

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. The FDNY Office of Medical Affairs is charged with providing medical oversight of the New York City 911 EMS System. This mission is accomplished through establishing mechanisms to monitor all medical and clinical aspects of the FDNY and NYC 911 Emergency Medical Service system as it relates to patient care activities. Led by the Chief Medical Director, OMA’s oversight includes the development and implementation of the scope of practice for all providers, establishment of medical treatment protocols and ensuring of ongoing Quality Assurance and Improvement for EMS field practice, provision of pre-hospital personnel and physician training, establishment of Online Medical Control (OLMC) and EMS Dispatch call receiving algorithms, and ensuring of 911-receiving emergency department hospital compliance with EMS protocols and regulations. OMA also oversees and participates as one of the 18 designated EMS Program Agencies in the State of New York and is an integral part of the NYC Disaster Response System with the New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) in planning for mass casualty events and represents FDNY at the NYC Regional EMS Council, NY State EMS Council and other EMS Committees locally, Federally, and at the State level. OMA also participates in Urban Search and Rescue Response as part of the National FEMA Response Task Force.

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Emergent Medicine Physician to serve as a Division Medical Director in the Office of Medical Affairs (OMA). Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Director, the successful candidate will: provide medical and clinical direction for the certified first responders (CFR), emergency medical technicians (EMT), and paramedics (EMT-Ps) of the FDNY and the NYC 911 System. In addition to borough level clinical oversight, provision of Online Medical Control, delivery of initial and continuing medical education, clinical research projects, and regular field activities including but not limited to response to specialty and mass casualty incidents, and interaction with field personnel and local hospital clinical and administrative personnel, management and provision of continuous quality improvement initiatives and provision of medical oversight in the 911 system, as mandated by New York State Public Health Law for EMS systems within the State. The selected candidate shall also participate in Regional EMS Council (REMSCO) and Regional Emergency Advisory Committee (REMAC) meetings and subcommittee meetings, as well as some State EMS meetings, and provide medical direction of specialty EMS units (Rescue, HazTac) and participate as a member of the FDNY's FEMA NYTF-1 Urban Search and Rescue team. Completion of other activities at the discretion of the Chief Medical Director and as required by State rules and regulations shall also be required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty; and four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or
2. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in "1" above. However, all candidates must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills

1.
