Purpose:

The VP, Senior Portfolio Manager, plays a critical leadership role in overseeing and administering a portfolio of commercial and consumer loans, with a specialized focus on cash flow-based repayment structures. This role is instrumental in credit risk management of loans after closing and is not responsible for sourcing new loans or underwriting. The VP, Senior Portfolio Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing the credit administration of the Bank’s traditional loan portfolio, which is comprised primarily of SBA 7(a) and conventional commercial, with some 1-4 family construction, retail point of sale, and other business lines as well.

This position is designed for a seasoned credit professional with deep expertise in credit administration, credit analysis, loan documentation, as well as a thorough understanding of banking practices, regulatory standards, and SBA SOP 50 10 8 and 50 57 4.

The VP, Senior Portfolio Manager ensures that all administration activities align with regulatory standards, including CFR Part 364 – Standards for Safety and Soundness, while driving sound financial decisions through rigorous analysis of financial trends, Debt Service Coverage Ratio, and others.

With proven management experience, the Senior Portfolio Manager will lead a high-performing team, uphold credit quality, and contribute to the strategic growth and risk management of the Bank’s Credit Dept. VP, Senior Portfolio Manager will work closely with the Chief Credit Officer, the Bank’s Loan Committee, and other Credit Dept. Staff.

Tasks:

VP, Senior Portfolio Manager, primary responsibilities are:

  1. Portfolio Oversight & Monitoring
  • Directly manage the credit review and credit administration functions of the Bank’s loan portfolios to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to internal Bank Policies, SBA SOPs, and regulatory standards, including CFR Part 364.
  • Ensure the safety, soundness, and profitability of the Bank’s loan portfolios by enforcing disciplined processes, documentation, and oversight.
  • Monitor loan performance, identify risk trends, and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and present periodic reports and updates on portfolio status, health, and performance.
  • Conduct thorough financial analysis including trend evaluation, Debt Service Coverage, and other ratios to properly evaluate and grade loans. This is critical to our ability to identify deteriorating credits early.
  • Maintain detailed loan documentation, risk ratings, action plans, and reporting in accordance with bank policies and regulatory requirements.
  1. Credit Administration
  • Maintain up-to-date and compliant loan files, including verification of insurance coverages and confirmation that property taxes are paid and current.
  • Ensure full compliance with SBA SOP 50 10 and SOP 50 57 throughout the loan lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with Credit, Legal, Risk & Compliance, Operations Teams to maintain robust credit administration practices.
  • Develop and oversee the Bank’s risk rating framework, produce risk rating recommendations, and present to Bank’s Loan Committee for approval.
  • Maintain a standardized servicing Work in Process log with appropriate detail.
  1. Operational Leadership
  • Provide overall loan portfolio management support to ensure that the Bank’s asset quality meets stated objectives and that the emphasis of the Bank’s overall credit relationship management is consistent with the Bank’s underwriting standards.
  • Oversee the onboarding of new Loan Origination System (LOS) and the uploading of Bank’s loan portfolio into LOS.
  • Enhance and strengthen policies and procedures for credit monitoring and servicing.
  • Oversee the successful and timely resolution of auditor findings and noteworthy observations.
  • Directly coordinate with internal and external auditors
  • Ensure maintenance of Bank credit standards through communication with Credit Dept. Staff. Make recommendations and initiate enhancements to policies, procedures, and training materials as needed.
  • Behave in a manner conducive with Bank employees, both within and outside the Bank.
  • Participate in the development of the Bank’s strategic objectives.
  • Work to recognize and take advantage of opportunities and develop solutions to challenges.
  • Support other Bank departments as needed.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders including credit analysts, relationship managers, and senior management on credit administration and risk mitigation.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures to improve loan performance and mitigate future portfolio risk.
  • Ensure maintenance of Bank credit standards through communication with Credit Dept. Staff. Make recommendations and initiate enhancements as applicable.
  • Provide overall loan portfolio management support to ensure that the Bank’s asset quality meets stated objectives and that the emphasis of the Bank’s overall credit relationship management is consistent with the Bank’s underwriting standards.
  • Support, communicate, and live the Bank’s values.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in analyzing commercial loan structures, financial statements, and collateral documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple loan files effectively and independently.
  • Knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedures, Loan Origination (SOP 50 10), and Loan Servicing & Liquidation (SOP 50 57).
  • Strong organization, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to meet time constraints and effectively communicate to achieve goals identified with senior management and supervised staff.
  • Knowledge of commercial due diligence, commercial loan documentation, and business entity documentation.
  • Ability to clearly communicate deficiencies for timely resolution to balance customer needs with program requirements.


Required Education / Experience / License:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial loan workouts, special assets, or credit risk management in a banking or financial services environment.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

Preferred Education /Experience / License:

  • Formal credit training or certification in commercial credit analysis (CCRA, CBA, CCE, etc.).
  • NAGGL Training and Certifications.
  • Experience with Current Expected Credit Losses (“CECL”) rules and regulations.

Minimum Essential Requirements:

  • Sit or stand at a computer for extended periods of time and look at a computer screen for several hours a day.
  • Work at an assigned FinWise office location.
  • Communicate with others in person, on the phone, virtual meeting, and email.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Lift 20 lbs.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
