Job Title: Shelter Manager
Description: Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY is looking for candidates who support our mission to alleviate the suffering, promote the comforts, improve the conditions, and prevent cruelty to animals. Successful candidates will help create a culture of philanthropy by sharing a passion to serve animals and people in our community, by providing exceptional animal care and customer service. Candidates are expected to increase awareness and support of the organization by being knowledgeable of FLSPCA of CNY’S events, and programs.
The shelter manager’s role is to be responsible for the daily operations of the shelter, oversee shelter employees, policies, and procedures, monitor animals for signs of stress as well as keep work areas clean, tidy, and stocked. Reports to the Executive Director.
Essential Job Duties:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the shelter.
- Supervise and lead shelter employees.
- Develop standard operating procedures. Using best practices in animal sheltering
- Collaborate with the executive director to create innovative programs to increase lifesaving efforts.
- Increase the number of positive outcomes, and decrease the average length of stay for sheltered animals using best practices in animal sheltering.
- Coordinate and develop onsite & offsite adoption events.
- Prepare reports and paperwork
- Assist with budget development
- Recommend and implement approved cost-saving measures
- Oversee shelter supplies and inventories
- Oversee and develop volunteer positions
- Perform daily walkthroughs to monitor health of all animals, and ensure proper shelter flow
- Ensure social media, and media outlets are updated weekly
- Reconcile daily funds
- Perform bank deposits as needed
- Assist with fundraising development
- develop and implement community service programs
- Conduct intake and adoption conversations, and show animals to adoption candidates.
- Completes all necessary paperwork and transactions for animal income & outcome.
- Provide excellent customer service to all FLSPCA of CNY guests.
- Answer phone calls, and respond to voicemails.
- Exercise empathy, and patience when dealing with clients in crisis.
- Knowledgeable about different animal species, and can troubleshoot basic medical and behavioral issues seen in adoptive homes.
- Monitor & document basic animal welfare: eating, drinking, urination, defecation, and behavior to identify potential issues.
- Handle animals of various temperaments.
- Provide Cleaning and feeding to animals for the morning, and afternoon checks, following standard operating procedures.
- Assist in general housekeeping functions such as dishes, laundry, and stocking as needed.
- Input person, and animal information into internal shelter software as needed.
- Provide animal medications as needed.
- Ensures all animals, and the building our secure upon closing
- Carry out responsibilities per the company’s policies and applicable state/ federal laws.
- Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Position Requirements:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required, degree in business administration, animal science, veterinary technician, or a closely related field preferred. Fear-free shelter certification is required or obtained within 6 months post-hire.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year in a customer service role, Minimum 2 year in a manager role, Minimum 2 year in animal welfare, Animal experience required, experience with animals of various temperaments.
Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Strong customer service skills required. Strong animal handling skills are preferred. Basic computer skills, ability to learn internal software. Ability to operate animal chip scanner, washer, and dryer, medical syringes, and cleaning supplies.
Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, speak, hear and see, lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
