General Definition of Work
The senior accountant, under general supervision, performs technical accounting work including financial statement preparation and analysis, year-end close responsibilities, external audit coordination, report preparation, and special projects. Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the financial activities of the Accounting Department. This position requires a high level of independence, critical thinking, accuracy, and confidentiality.

Place of Work
The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions
- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
- Assist leadership with the maintenance of various funds and accounts, including coordinating and reviewing work to ensure it is completed in a timely and accurate manner
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
- Prepare and review financial statements to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting policies
- Assist with preparation of Annual Comprehensive Financial Report
- Prepare variance explanations on monthly financial statements and other special reports
- Prepare for the annual external financial audit by assisting with compiling and reviewing various schedules as required
- Assist in monitoring work of staff in the department
- Instruct staff on office procedures, technical accounting issues, and applications of various rules, regulations, and accounting procedures
- Prepare and review of assigned general ledger and bank account reconciliations; assist other staff with reconciliation issues
- Coordinate escheat process including annual filing and due diligence requirements
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify areas for process improvement
- Assists with school audits when necessary
- Perform related work as assigned or required
