We are seeking an experienced Wildfire Meteorologist to define fire weather conditions and integrate comprehensive weather data into our wildfire risk assessment models. This individual will work with large gridded historical datasets, integrate real-time weather data, and assist in generating simulation model inputs for wildfire risk assessments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define fire weather classification models relevant to wildfire risk assessments.
  • Benchmark PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoff) weather conditions against historical data to enhance predictive capabilities.
  • Integrate real-time weather data into workflows using APIs and downscale forecast data to high resolution.
  • Work extensively with large gridded historical datasets to analyze weather patterns affecting wildfire behavior.
  • Contribute to the generation of simulation model inputs, focusing on the accuracy and relevance of weather data.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to present weather data findings and impacts to clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in meteorological modeling software (e.g., WRF, MM5, HRRR, or similar).
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and integration with meteorological data.
  • Familiarity with Python, R, or other programming languages for data/statistical analysis, visualization, and process automation.
  • Knowledge of data assimilation techniques and real-time weather data integration (e.g., RTMA, Herbie).
  • Strong skills in analyzing large meteorological datasets (e.g., gridded weather data, remote sensing data).
  • Experience in visualizing weather patterns and interpreting complex meteorological data for operational applications.
  • Ability to handle large datasets and derive actionable insights from complex weather patterns.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical data clearly and concisely.

Education/Experience

  • M.S. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of experience working with real-time weather data, coding, and weather modeling, preferably in the private sector.

Compensation Range

The estimated compensation range for this position is $95,000 to $150,000 a year for a full-time, exempt position. FEP takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience.
